Two New Zealand Teams chosen for 46th Gov Cup

by Nancy Mellon on 3 Jun 2012
Coltman leads David Hazard (RNZYS) in a close tacking duel - HARKEN Youth International Match Racing Championships Sara Tucker

David Hazard and Tim Coltman will lead their teams at Balboa Yacht Club’s 46th annual Governor’s Cup International Junior Match Racing Championship. David and his team mates from Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron placed third in 2011, while Tim and his team from Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club placed fourth.

They will be joined by the winners of the Rose Cup, a national youth match racing event to be held at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club (Florida) on June 20-24 as well as the South American youth match race champion and some of the best young match racing talent from Sweden, Australia, New Zealand and the US. The event will take place July 18 to 22, 2012

The racing will be held in the afternoons from Wednesday through Sunday in the ocean near the Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, California. The round robin format for the event provides spectators with continuous competition as each race features only two boats with each team racing against every other team at least once.

The talented racers will demonstrate a variety of tactics and skills as they race around buoys. It is especially exciting to watch when they round the weather mark, with colorful spinnakers flying. On the water International Umpires will provide instant response to protests and infractions. Up to date information will be available before, during and after the racing at www.balboayachtclub.com as well as on Gov Cup pages on facebook and twitter.

The remaining teams represent Yacht Clubs that have participated one or more times during the 46 year history of the Governor’s Cup.
Nevin Snow, the skipper of the 2011 winning team from San Diego Yacht Club and the youngest ever winner of the Cup, will return to race again together with his 2011 crew since all are still eligible. Nevin will try to become the eighth two-time winner in Cup history.

Behind every great sporting event like Governor’s Cup are great sponsors. Without their generous support, the event would not be possible. This year there are many returning sponsors. The presenting sponsor is Sterling BMW. In addition, Newport Balboa Sailing and Seamanship Association (NBSSA), owner and manager of the Governor’s Cup 21 sailboat racing fleet, and CR&R, a leading Southern California waste and recycling company, will provide extensive support.

Additional information will be available on the Balboa Yacht Club website: www.balboayachtclub.com/GovCup.

The kind of conversations I have with her run along these lines.... In the olden days we did not have television until I left school and they had a thing called print magazines, that reported events between two weeks and four months after they happened. And her sceptical response... Hoh! Daddy, Hoh!

World Sailing Cup V3 - A Dead Rat in a Shoe or Spring Daffodils?
While a host of major sailing events go from strength to strength, the Sailing World Cup has very major issues. Last night my Irish better half was sitting beside me on the sofa watching an Australian version of the popular TV Cooking Program My Kitchen Rules on a tablet with her headphones while I was watching Diehard II for the seventeenth time (it’s a boy thing) on TV. She suddenly spluttered and laughed, took off her headphones and motioned for me to mute Diehard. (Seriously!!)
