Try Crewing Day, an initiative of the BIA NSW, has been held at five Clubs around the state, attracting people keen to get a hands-on taste of crewing and sample the Club-lifestyle for themselves.

Held Sunday 12 September at RANSA at Rushcutters Bay, Royal Motor Yacht Club in Port Hacking, the Middle Harbour Yacht Club in Mosman, the Gosford Sailing Club and the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club in Wickham, the first annual Try Crewing Day aimed to bring some new blood to Clubs, involving people in the varied facets of club competition and social sailing.

According to Domenic Genua, marketing and event manager at BIA, Clubs and the BIA identified that there was a need to 'break down barriers between the Clubs and Mr and Mrs Average' to get more people involved.

'We launched the pilot study last year and started the program this year with five clubs. The Clubs told us there was a lack of hands for crewing in social and competitive sailing, so Try Crewing aims to get people into Clubs and show them what it's all about.'

Aimed at a different demographic from Try Sailing, Try Crewing targets the over 18s, introducing people to the social aspects of their local Clubs, the lifestyle and some of the many benefits of boating.

The day involved a club briefing of one hour showing the ins and outs of crewing, followed by a tour of a boat and actual sail, then wrapped up with a debrief at the club about participating in the sport.

'All clubs run regular social, twilight and racing days and evenings,' says Genua. 'An important part of the Try Crewing Day is to let people know how to become a regular part of these events.'

Genua reports the Clubs counted around 180 people through their doors for the Try Crewing Day. 'There were around 140 people who registered, then about 30 to 40 people who turned up on the day to the various clubs. The clubs involved said some people were so enthusiastic, they signed up on the day.'

But it's like everything, he admits. 'It will take some time to build it to its full potential. New activities, like a show, require time and energy before they get the ball rolling. We are hopeful it will become a great exercise in attracting new members.'

Sunday 7 November will be Try Sailing Day. Watch this space for more!
