Trophies handed out at Skandia Geelong Week |
Skandia Geelong Week came to a close today as trophies were presented to winners in the many different classes and divisions at the end of what competitors described as 'a great event – and a lot of fun.' The event started last Wednesday on Port Phillip at Williamstown for some classes and moved to Corio Bay at Geelong following the 34 nautical mile passage race, which provided a spectacular sight for onlookers as close to 400 monohull and multihull boats amassed on the start line under sunny skies off the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria, who helped host the series. Mixed weather conditions throughout the regatta provided a fair playing field for all. Those who won trophies did the hard yards, both tactically and with good crew work, particularly on those four-five knot light air days with shifting and patchy conditions. Snap Printing S80 Series In the Snap Printing S80 four-race Series, Timothy Say (Assailant, Vic) took first place by six points from Grant Hailes’ Moondah (Vic), following two wins from four races. Anthony Beck (Vic) finished third, just one point behind. Thunderbird Sunsail Trophy The Thunderbird division came down to the wire, with Callum Wilkinson’s Werewolf taking the Sunsail trophy after a blow by blow series with second placegetter Stardust (Lucy Townson), which finished just one point behind. Mike Denny’s Scarecrow was third in the four-race series and all three were proudly representing host venue, Royal Geelong Yacht Club, where Thunderbirds are go! Multihull Geelong Radio Cabs A small division of two, nobody missed out on a prize in the Multihull Geelong Radio Cabs Trophy series, but Cascade, owned by Alex MacNaughtan from the Multihull Yacht Club of Victoria, defeated club mate David Guy (Pacifica) in all four races of the series to win the trophy. Cascade, a Crowther 46, had superior speed over Guy’s Fullwood 40. Classics – Parks Victoria This three races series was such a close series that it came down to a tied situation for the Classics – Parks Victoria Trophy, meaning the winner was decided on countback. Barry Purcell, sailing his Rhodes Bounty 45 Scimitar (Vic), beat Royal Yacht Club of Victoria clubmate Richard Gates’ Laurent Giles designed Wanita for the trophy, due to his win in the final race in a series that could have gone to any of the top five finishers. Third place was taken by Thomas Chittenden from the host club sailing his S&S Cotton Blossom. Trailable – Four Points by Sheraton Skandia representatives were delighted when Skandia Creativity, skippered by Rod Caldwell, took out the Trailable – Four Points by Sheraton series. Caldwell’s Ross 780 won three of the four races sailed after a close series with second placed Herman Van Ree’s Noelex 25 Executive Suite. Heaven Can Wait, an Austral/Clubman 8 owned by (John Lucas), finished third overall. All three represented Victorian clubs. Yachting Victoria Dinghy Championship Twenty four competitors sailing various classes contested this Yachting Victoria initiative which is expected to grow in coming years at Skandia Geelong Week. Jim and Bianca Scott sailing their Formula 15 Nitro won the six race one-drop series from 2005 world champion Moth sailor, Rohan Veal (Ronstan) and Michael Williams Epoxy Magic, an OK Dinghy. All three represent Black Rock Yacht Club, which has produced more champions than not over the years. Veal, a regular at the event, is always entertaining for onlookers as he 'foils' through the air with his fast Moth. This year he brought his newest Moth to Corio Bay and spent time, as he always does, showing enthusiasts just how it works. Expect to see upwards of 30 dinghies/skiffs on the water at Skandia Geelong Week next year.
