Trofeo Princesa Sofía – US Sailing Team Sperry led by Finn and Radial

by Will Ricketson on 3 Apr 2015
Charlie Buckingham, Laser - Trofeo Sofia Iberostar Will Ricketson / US Sailing Team http://home.ussailing.org/
After three days of racing at the Trofeo Princesa Sofía, where over 1,200 of the world's best sailors have gathered to compete, the US Sailing Team Sperry is led on the leaderboard by athletes competing in the Laser Radial and Finn classes.

In the men's heavyweight Finn dinghy, Caleb Paine (San Diego, Calif.) moved upwards with solid scores of 8,12 in the 74-boat fleet. Paine remains in the hunt for the podium and is now 11 points from bronze position with two days of racing left until the medal round. The 2014 ISAF Sailing World Cup Final bronze medalist suffered two deep scores in unstable conditions earlier in the regatta, but has fought his way back towards the front of the pack.

In the Laser Radial, perennial contender Paige Railey (Clearwater, Fla.) entered the day in third overall, and a deep score to open racing on day three threatened to drop Railey out of the top ten until she recovered with a ninth in the second race. Now sitting in seventh overall, Railey is just five points from bronze in the typically tight 117-boat fleet.

Women's 470 sailors Annie Haeger (East Troy, Wisc.) and Briana Provancha (San Diego, Calif.) started the day with excellent speed in the first race and crossed the finish line in sixth, only to discover that they had been penalized for being over the line early at the start. A mid-fleet finish in a shifty second race has the multiple ISAF Sailing World Cup medalists in ninth overall as they enter day four.

Gold fleet racing continues on Thursday, April 2 at the Trofeo Princesa Sofía in Spain.
