Cheminées Poujoulat a franchi la ligne d'arrivée de la Transat Jacques Vabre à 01 h 19 min 44 s (heure française) ce lundi. Bernard Stamm et Philippe Legros terminent donc quatrièmes dans la catégorie des IMOCA, après avoir bouclé les 5 450 milles du parcours entre Le Havre et Itajaí en 17 jours 12 heures 19 minutes et 44 secondes à la vitesse moyenne de 12,85 noeuds. S'ils ont jeté toutes leurs forces dans la bataille, ils sont quand même un peu déçus. Et pour cause, ils ont payé lourdement deux petites fautes commises entre le Cap Vert et la sortie du Pot-au-Noir, sans véritable occasion de se refaire ensuite. Preuve, s'il en faut, qu'à ce niveau de compétition, le droit à l'erreur n'existe pas. Car c'est un fait, cette 11e édition de la Route du Café s'est révélée à la fois d'une rare intensité et d'un niveau exceptionnel.

Les sentiments à l'arrivée
Bernard Stamm : « Nous nous étions fixé pour objectif la victoire, nous terminons quatrièmes. Forcément nous sommes un peu déçus, je ne peux pas dire le contraire mais nous nous sommes bien battus. Je suis parti avec une gastro-entérite, du coup, j'ai raté mon départ. Malgré tout, nous avons réussi à revenir aux avant-postes. L'erreur c'est que nous nous sommes laissé un peu emporter dans l'ouest après les Canaries. Nous avons tardé à changer de voile puis nous nous sommes retrouvés coincés sous un maudit nuage. C'est dommage mais c'est une faute que nous avons faite et que nous ne pouvons reprocher qu'à nous-mêmes. Le hic, c'est qu'après, c'est parti par devant. Nous avons essayé de recoller au score en tentant des petits décalages mais nous n'avons jamais eu les mêmes conditions que les leaders. Nous avons tenté un coup au large à l'approche de Rio mais les autres ont réussi à glisser tout le temps. Et pour cause, il y avait finalement du vent partout. Quand on est un peu derrière, on espère toujours une situation compliquée pour pouvoir se refaire. Là, il n'y en a pas eu. C'est comme ça et c'est la preuve que le droit à l'erreur n'existe pas. »

Philippe Legros : « Le point positif, c'est que nous n'avons connu aucun souci technique et que nous avons pu nous battre avec l'ensemble de nos armes. Evidemment, nous sommes un peu déçus sur le plan sportif parce que nous avions les moyens de faire mieux. Nous n'avons pas raté grand-chose. Seulement deux petits détails. Trois jours avant le Pot-au-Noir, pendant près de 24 heures, nous n'avons pas été assez incisifs et nous sommes restés trop longtemps sous spi au lieu de renvoyer le gennaker. Résultat, nous nous sommes retrouvés embarqués dans l'ouest alors que nous ne le souhaitions pas. Ensuite, comme nous étions un peu en retard dans la Zone de Convergence Inter Tropicale, nous avons attaqué dans l'ouest, ce qui s'est révélé être aussi une erreur. Une erreur qui, en réalité, était surtout une conséquence de la première. »

Le Bateau
Bernard : « C'est vraiment le point positif de cette Transat Jacques Vabre. Nous avons pu nous battre sans rencontrer aucun problème technique hormis hier, avec le fusible de safran, ce qui n'était en fait rien de grave. Nous avons pu régater correctement. Notre place de 4e, je le répète, nous ne la devons qu'à nous car le bateau s'est bien comporté. Le long du Portugal, dans le vent fort, nous avons pu faire parler tout son potentiel et nous nous sommes retrouvés en tête. Ca a été un peu plus compliqué à l'approche du Pot-au-Noir dans les vents instables mais globalement, il n'y a rien à dire sinon que Philippe a été un peu surpris, je pense, par le manque cruel de confort à bord. »

Philippe : « Nous le savions déjà mais c'est un fait : Cheminées Poujoulat est plus à l'aise dans le vent fort. Nous avons pu le constater parfaitement entre les côtes portugaises et les Canaries où nous avons pu appuyer sur l'accélérateur et remonter la flotte pour finalement nous retrouver premier. Nous espérions d'ailleurs que notre avance après ça serait suffisante pour réussir à bien sortir du Pot et de l'instabilité qui le caractérise, mais notre erreur la grillée entièrement. Quoi qu'il en soit, concernant le confort, nous allons procéder à quelques amélioration parce qu'actuellement, c'est vraiment compliqué et pour être performant sur le long terme, il en faut un minimum. »

Le jeu
Bernard : « La concurrence, on la connaissait avant de partir et elle s'est logiquement montrée au niveau auquel on l'attendait. Les bateaux sont très proches en termes de performance. Ce sont les bonshommes qui font la différence. Nous avons commis des petites erreurs, nous les payons. Quoi qu'il en soit, c'était une belle régate. Une transat aussi éprouvante que rapide. Il fallait de la puissance quasiment tout le temps car il n'y a eu aucun temps mort. Le bateau a été sous l'eau en permanence. Ca va faire du bien de sortir un peu de l'humidité ambiante de ces 17 derniers jours. »

Philippe : « C'est vrai qu'après le Pot-au-Noir, il n'y a pas eu de grandes ouvertures stratégiques. Toutefois, le long des côtes brésiliennes, il y a quand même eu du jeu parce que nous n'étions pas dans des alizés de base, bien établis. Le truc, c'est que la concurrence en IMOCA est tellement pointue et affûtée que personne ne commet de grosses erreurs. Tout le monde sait parfaitement comment se tirer au mieux d'un front ou de n'importe quelle situation délicate. C'est d'ailleurs ce qui rend la régate si intéressante et si belle. »
