Top Of The Gulf Regatta - Easy Tiger Racing grabs the lead

Top of the Gulf Regatta 2012 - The Ferret Guy Nowell/Top of the Gulf
At the 2012 Top of The Gulf Regatta, despite juggling a demanding social schedule, the crew onboard The Ferret powered by Easy Tiger Racing pulled out all stops to take the overall lead after the second day of the Platu Coronation Cup.

Racing got underway in a light eight knot breeze and with three windward/leeward races the Tigers knew they were going to have to fight hard today to stay ahead of the hungry pack snapping at their heels.

With fifteen highly competitive crews fighting it out for the Coronation Cup, one of Asia’s most prestigious yachting trophies the pressure was on. After a dusty start Team Tiger finished the first race in fifth place but redeemed themselves by getting the gun in the second race of the day. By then they had found their rhythm and finished second in the third. This positions the Australian team in first place with a handy four point advantage over their closest rival Rolf Heemskerk’s Nataya.

'We might have been a little dusty today but we managed to dust off the fleet today,' Skipper Chris Way said back at the dock.

'It was a great day and luckily for us one with a very happy ending. I’m pretty stoked with where we are sitting at the halfway mark of the regatta. It’s a great position to be in with five races down and five still to go,' he added.

Way said that the crew is working like a well-oiled machine and the pre-regatta training is definitely paying off.

'Consistency, consistency, consistency is what all our coaches have always tried to drum into us and even though there is one race we can drop it's best to assume nothing.'

Nataya, wasn’t quite on the pace with a sixth and fifth in the first two races, but found her mojo again to get a bullet in the day’s last race to stay in touch with the Tigers and is in second overall. Naiad, skippered by Chai Weiguo, has moved into third overall after a second, fourth and fifth placing today.

Blue skies, sunshine, 23 deg C, clean air, and the whole place looks as if has put on a party frock and got lit up. Wonderful.
