The Volvo Ocean Race will provide a cutting edge media photographic service in 2008-09, including state-of-the-art online archive and distribution, while leading marine photographer Rick Tomlinson has been appointed as the official race photographer.

Rick Tomlinson Photography was established in 1986 at the conclusion of the 1985-86 Whitbread Round the World Race. Rick had been a crewmember/boat builder aboard the Maxi Drum and had a keen interest in photography. His pictures taken onboard Drum set new standards in onboard photography and were published in magazine and newspapers around the world.

Since 1986 Rick has been a professional yachting photographer. Combining racing and photography he competed in three Whitbread races onboard The Card, Intrum Justitia and Team EF where he was commissioned for a feature article by National Geographic Magazine.

Rick was the official photographer to the 2001-02 Volvo Ocean Race, producing some outstanding images which have become the icons of the race.

In 2005-06 Rick was responsible for photography for Ericsson Racing Team’s entry in the Volvo Ocean Race, working in partnership with Thierry Martinez, from France.

'The Whitbread and Volvo Race have been integral to my career as a yachting photographer,' Rick says. 'To do the Whitbread was my only ambition at school, and to race in four events was a great experience. With every race challenges change dramatically; new designs, faster boats and better crews. It is a true professional arena. This time it’s the course that sets the new challenge, both for the sailors and for photographers like me that will capture the images,' he adds.

Rick’s images, and those taken onboard the racing yachts while they are offshore, will be distributed by onEdition, who have an enviable reputation for quality distribution and count the Velux 5-Oceans Race, the Barcelona World Race and the Artemis Transat among their global clients. Selected images shot by the teams’ official photographers will also be distributed by OnEdition.

Established eight years ago by a pair of national newspaper photographers, Matthew Dickens and Dan Towers, onEdition has since grown into being one of the world’s most respected photographic and distribution agencies.

'It is fantastic to be involved in the race, being the very pinnacle of offshore yacht racing. We are really looking forward to developing coverage in areas that have not previously concentrated on this sport before and providing a truly pro-active service to the world’s media. The team we have in place is highly professional and will deliver the drama of the race to the media as it unfolds. From our news background we understand that time is of the essence and we will be delivering images to a global media audience on an almost live basis,' says onEdition director, Matthew Dickens.

The entire collection of Volvo Ocean Race images, spanning three events, is housed in a specially built archive designed by Bright Interactive, a young and progressive company situated in Brighton, UK, whose clients include British Telecom and the London Fire Brigade.

'We were very pleased to be involved in this project to implement Asset Bank for the Volvo Ocean Race. The combination of Asset Bank's state-of-the-art functionality and the Volvo Ocean Race's superb images make this one of the most impressive image libraries available,' commented Bright Interactive director, Martin Wilson.

The new state-of-the art system http://images.volvooceanrace.org, provides the user with a digital management system which is quick and easy to use. Each new user is required to register initially to use the service. Picture editors who are currently already registered to the original image archive will need to re-register to use the new system.

If the URL is mislaid, it is easy to find the image library via the link from the online media centre found on the home page of www.VolvoOceanRace.org.

The all-new online image archive presents images from past Volvo Ocean Races as well as a collection of the best images for each race, many of them shot by the world’s leading marine photographers and others by the crews themselves as they race around the world.

All images on the archive are available for editorial use royalty-free, but any commercial or non-editorial use must be discussed with the Volvo Ocean Race picture desk (images@volvooceanrace.org) before download to ensure that necessary rights are available.

'Nearly 1,000 media have already registered on the new image archive,' says Tim Stonton, picture desk manager for the Volvo Ocean Race. 'In fact the re-vamped image library attracted 500 new registrations within the first 48 hours of its launch and the media is continuing to register now that the start of the world’s premier offshore race is less than six months away.'

The 2008-09 event will be the 10th running of this ocean marathon. Starting from Alicante in Spain on 4 October, it will for the first time, take in ports in Asia. Spanning some 39,000 nautical miles, stopping at around 11 ports and taking nine months to complete, the Volvo Ocean Race is the world’s premier yacht race for professional racing crews.
