Martin Krite, bowman on board Ericsson 3 reflects on the race, three months later

To sail the Volvo Ocean Race was I dream I have had since I was a kid. To live your dream is a privilege that not many people get to do, but I was fortunate to get the opportunity. It was an adventure beyond the usual where I pushed myself to the utmost limits, both physically and mentally, time and time again. It went so far that I many times thought to myself that when I got ashore, I would never set my foot onboard on a sailing boat again.

A question that I have been asked frequently after the race is whether I ever was scared. Fear was an element in this race, but also one of the things I have learnt to manage in a better way than before. You learn a lot during a loop around the world. Sure, you become a better sailor, no doubt, but it is also improves you as a human being. You improve on a personal as well as a social level. To live so close together with other people during such a long time is an experience I will always keep with me. To be part of a crew like that on Ericsson 3 is something I will always remember with a lot of pride and a lot of joy. We had a wonderful journey together.

The culmination was Leg 5 when we early one morning in Rio slipped across the finish line after one and a half month battle. A day like that makes all the hard work worth it. That joy is a feeling I do not know if I will ever experience again, but it will live in my memory for a very long time.

As I am writing this, I am still sailing with many of my crew mates on Ericsson 3 and that must be a very good grade for a sailing campaign when so many participants refuse to let go, even if we all know that the time for that will come soon. No matter what, I will always carry many memories, many friends and a joy and pride over having been given the opportunity to be a small part of this race.

Thanks for your interest.
Martin Krite
