The 38th Australian Tasar Championships 'flooded' with entries

by Nicole Douglass on 3 Jan 2011
Launching at Woollahra - The 38th Australian Tasar Championships Canberra Media
The 38th Australian Tasar Championships kicked off with the invitational race yesterday at Woollahra Sailing Club. After a rush of late minute entries, the fleet of 73 will be on the water today.

Aaron Linton and Jamie Jochheim in 'AA Team' were the story of the day, taking out the invitational race after driving down through flooded North Queensland at the last minute to contest the event. Given a small window of opportunity, and after the great time they had at the Airlie Beach Nationals in July this year (where they came second), they made it down only on the evening of New Years Day after driving non-stop. They are definitely one to watch this regatta. Scott and Julie Olsen in 'Unleashed', and Pete Ellis and Charlotte Birbeck in 'Poms Away' sailed exceptionally well to finish close behind in the 15-18 knot south-east breeze.

There were 50 finishers out of the 73 boat fleet, with some retiring, some remaining onshore and others yet to arrive. All will be on the water today to contest the first heats of the 10 heat series, commencing from 1pm today.

There are spectator boats daily for racing, inquire at Woollahra Sailing Club and book by 6pm the day prior.

Thanks to the major sponsors Bethwaite Design and Ronstan for making the regatta possible.
