On the eve of the Telcoinabox Airlie Beach Race Week, the scene is set for some great racing on tropical Whitsunday waters in Queensland. Crews gathered tonight for the welcome party hosted by the Whitsunday Sailing Club in Airlie Beach, keenly discussing the forecast and winds expected in the forthcoming days. Stuart ‘Jock’ Ross from the Race Management team detailed the conditions expected for the regatta opener, the traditional Double Cone – Armit Island Race, starting off the Abel Point marina tomorrow. ‘We are expecting it to be light south wester for the start of race, which is set to increase to 20 – 25 in the afternoon' further adding 'that conditions will move around to the south east as the regatta progresses.' South Australian entrant, Rob Remilton who travels extensively with his multihull Wilparana II, has made his fourth trip to Airlie Beach. Despite a few ‘hassles’ on his way up, he is looking forward to some great sailing, a major drawcard for his return to this regatta. He noted ‘there are 18 multihulls in the Racing Division and eight in the Cruising Multihulls, so we’re looking forward to some great fun in the sun.' Included in the Multihull Racing Division is returning entrant Simon Hull’s Orma 60, Team Vodafone Sailing, from New Zealand. Speaking to Simon tonight he is ‘very happy and excited to be back and can’t wait for racing to commence tomorrow.’ For more regatta news and information please visit the Telcoinabox Airlie Beach Race Week website www.airliebeachraceweek.com.au
