Ahead of the final day of racing at the Techno 293 South American Championships in Mendoza, Argentina Francisco Saubidet Birkner (ARG) had the title sewn up but Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games spots were there for the taking.
Birkner had an unassailable lead whilst Lars Van Sommeren (NED) and Geronimo Nores (USA) could not be budged from silver and bronze. This meant that the race was on for the sailors behind them with Youth Olympic Games spots up for grabs.
Birkner had guaranteed an Argentinean spot whilst a fifth place finish for Daniel Pereira ensured Brazil will have a Techno 293 racer on the start line in Nanjing.
Peru's Maria Belen Basso sailed consistently throughout the week and as well as taking the Girls South American title she also qualified for the Youth Olympic Games. Argentinean Micaela Lauret did enough to take the final spot.
