Team Boskalis finishes top five at Dutch F18 Nationals 2010

Team Boskalis - This weekend they finished fifth at the Dutch F18 Nationals 2010 on the North Sea along the coast of Noordwijk, Netherlands. The competitive fleet included 59 entries. The occasional duo Gunnar Larsen (NED) and Marja van Helden (NED) managed to maintain a top five position after seven races. Their teammates Pim Nieuwenhuis (NED) and Ferdinand van West (NED) ended up in sixth position, just one point behind. Darren Bundock (AUS) and Jeroen van Leeuwen (NED) won the title.

'These weren't the easiest conditions', concluded Team Manager Gunnar Larsen afterwards. Saturday commenced with a light breeze from the north, that picked up during the afternoon till comfortable double trapeze circumstances and a choppy sea. That changed on Sunday, as the wind turned to the east, which is an offshore direction. The sea was flat and the breeze very changeable in strength and angle. Larsen continues: 'I found it really hard and everybody had to sail strongly in order to be able to get back from a 40th till a fourth place if necessary.'

Christa van Helden (NED) en Wilco Stavenuiter (NED) finished eighteenth. Just before the event's start, Andrew Macpherson (AUS) and Olivier Witteveen (NED) decided to line up as well. They claimed a twentieth place.

Goals
Prior to the first gun, Larsen set the goals for Team Boskalis at the Dutch F18 Nationals 2010. That included a top five finish for himself and for Nieuwenhuis/Van West. He also raised the bar for Van Helden and Stavenuiter, as their target was a top eight position. These goals are partly met, so Larsen is not totally satisfied. 'This year's Nationals were actually a kind of Mini Worlds. If you look at the top, you see the twofold Olympic silver medalist winning the title. The double F18 World Champion taking silver and the 2007 European F18 Champion bronze on equal points with the winner of silver at the 2007 Tornado Worlds. Given this high level, I am pleased with our results. It was my first time competing with Marja and Pim normally crews on the F18. Christa and Wilco had some good races. Although I am happy with their eighteenth place, I know they can do better.'

Nice location
Larsen praised the organizing qualities and the hospitality of the Sailing Club of Noordwijk: 'They did a fantastic job with all their volunteers. It was a well organized and nice event. They even surprised us with snacks, while rigging down our boat. Noordwijk is a very nice location.'

Top five final results Dutch F18 Nationals 2010 after seven races, including a discard:
1. AUS, Bundock/Van Leeuwen, 13 points
