Taylor Canfield earns invitation to Grade 1 Congressional Cup

Collegiate champion and Chicago Match Race Center (CMRC) member Taylor Canfield (ISV) and his Team ISV composed of Matt Clark, Alden Reid, Tod Reynolds and Dave Shriner have won the US Grade 2 Trifecta, a series of three consecutive US-based ISAF Grade 2-ranked events held in the last three weeks in Chicago, Detroit, and New York. By winning the Trifecta, Canfield, 21, has also received an automatic invitation to compete next March at the ISAF Grade 1 Congressional Cup, hosted by Long Beach YC. The Trifecta represented the successful collaboration between organizers of three Open Grade 2 events: the CMRC’s Chicago Match Cup, held over 13-15 August; Bayview YC’s Toyota International Match Race for the Detroit Cup, held a week later over 19-22 August; and the Knickerbocker Cup, held over 25-29 August at Manhasset Bay YC in Port Washington, NY. Canfield and his team’s finishes of 3 – 4 – 6 were high enough to keep 10 points ahead of the runner-up team, CMRC Sailing Director Bill Hardesty and his Team Line Honors in the weighted high-point scoring series. 'It's a great honor to win the first-ever Trifecta,' said Canfield, a senior undergraduate at Boston College. 'Each event has its own unique style, but overall it’s fantastic to have the opportunity to compete in each, and we’re really looking forward to going to Long Beach in March.' Racing in the Trifecta events tested team skills in 3 different boat types: TOM 28 Max’s in Chicago, Ultimate 20’s in Detroit, and Colgate 26’s in New York. For the past two summers, Canfield has been coaching at the Chicago YC junior program, but in his free time has been training and racing at CMRC, and credits his membership there as being a big part of his success. 'They have been fantastic about setting up an opportunity to allow me to do a lot of sailing, and giving back to their program as well. It couldn’t be a better set-up for match racing, and I appreciate how there are so many regattas, seminars, and other ways to get out and sail and get better.' Canfield plans to compete in October at the King Edward VII Gold Cup at the Royal Bermuda YC, a stop on the World Match Racing Tour. 'The Trifecta is the result of a lot of great efforts we’ve made with other events in the US to get organized together,' says Hardesty. 'This has really accelerated the pace of growth in grass-roots match race sailing in the US, and also encouraged overseas teams to come here to compete.' A total of 14 teams representing 6 countries competed in the Trifecta events this year. The next events at the Chicago Match Race Center are the Autumn A and Autumn B Opens, two consecutive two-day ISAF Grade 3 events being held over Thursday-Sunday, 23-26 September 2010. http://www.chicagomatchrace.com
