Sunshine and Sea Breeze for Flying Fifteens

Beautiful conditions and close racing were the order of the weekend for the Flying Fifteens that visited the Bay of Islands Yacht Club.

Craig Coulam and Adrienne Rekke sported a new style mainsail on Blowffish, which they passed on the Chris Field and Jason King to trial on Ffilanderer on the second day. The fully battened top was taking a bit to get used to, but it seemed to perform very well.

On Saturday, the day breeze filled in just in time for the 11.30am start, and built up to a nice hiking breeze in the second race before easing again in the afternoon. The scheduled four races were sailed with only small breaks in between, so that the sailors could later celebrate a good day's work at the Club with stunning views of the sunsparkled Bay. Blowffish won three of the races, and Ffrenetic came first in the second race. Bill and Julie Kidman on Ffeisty were unstoppable in the Classic division, and even managed to finish in front of a Gold Fleet boat in race four. After trailing the fleet in the November regatta, Wayne Henderson and Matt Haase on Ffeeling Nauti were excited to finish as third Classic boat in race one.

The fleet tried to sail out with the remaining westerly to get to the race course on Sunday morning, but the wind disappeared completely, just to make way for the day breeze again when it was time for the first start. Race five was sailed in very light airs, and the last course race started light but then the breeze came up so it ended up a rather short single lap. Tempus Ffugit took both wins in the Classic division, and Ffilanderer pushed through to second in the light race, and Ffrenetic won race six. The final race was a Bay Race taking the fleet from Brampton to Paihia to Russell and finishing off the Bay of Islands Yacht Club in Ti Bay. Unfortunately the Gold Fleet missed a mark, so Ffeisty finished first by a narrow margin in front of Tempus Ffugit. Ffeling Nauti had been leading the race to the finish but had to take a penalty turn and ended up third.

In the final standings, Revival with Zane Lewis and David Wright still came third in the separate Classic ranking even though they only sailed on Saturday and collected four second places.

Congratulations to winners Blowffish!

A beautiful half model trophy created by Neil Deverell was presented to the Classic Division winners on Ffeisty.
