Sunferries Magnetic Island Race Week 2010 is underway.

Day One of the fourth annual series. Today's course for the IRC, PHS, Multihulls and Cruising 1 divisions was the 22.3 nautical mile Four Foot Rock Race, while the Race Committee set the 14.2 nautical mile Cape Cleveland Race for the Cruising 2 and Cruising Non Spinnaker divisions.

Under overcast skies with a east nor easter breeze blowing at four to seven knots, the fleet prepared for the starter's gun.

The IRC division was gunned away at 10.55am with PHS following shortly afterwards. The other divisions followed.

Drama as Zen, the Sydney 38 skippered by Gordon Ketelbey, with Peter Sorensen calling tactics and Quattro, the Elliott 11 skippered by Townsville's Graham Donnell were involved in a pre-start collision. Groove, Belinda Cooper's Sydney 32 from the Cairns Yacht Club and Quattro were called over at the start and went back behind the line and re-started.

The breeze had dropped away as the other divisions prepared for their gun. With the tide running PHS starter Dusty Muzzle (Ron Knott) was over early and had to return.

Half way up the first beat, 007, Jeffrey Brown's Northshore 38NSX from the Whitsunday Sailing Club crossed ahead of Zoe, Wayne Millar's Sydney 41 from the Townsville Yacht Club. However it was Zoe who found a useful shift and regained the lead at the first mark ahead of Zen, 007, local sailor Leon Thomas' Guilty Pleasures III and Tracey Johnstone's Brilliant Pearl from the Mooloolaba Yacht Club.

As the fleet worked towards Cape Cleveland, the breeze was gradually building up to eight knots, Zoe was holding out Zen as the two leaders rounded the corner and headed for Four Foot Rock.
