Star class crew, Hamish Pepper and Craig Monk have got off to a flying start at the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta, as did Andrew Murdoch in the Mens Laser event, scoring a first and second place in the split fleet, to also lie at the top of the points table. Pepper and Monk won both their races sailed at the 2012 Olympic venue at Weymouth and are convincing leaders in the class. It was a day of consistency in the Olympic keelboat, with a French crew scoring 2,3 placings and the German crew on 3,5 making for a tight grouping at the top of the points table. Highly fancied GBR crew, and 2008 Olympic Gold Medalists, Iain Percy and Bart Simpson had a dreadful opening day being scored as a non-starter in the opening race, and then placing 21st in the 36 boat fleet. Andrew Murdoch (NZL) almost equalled the Star crew's performance, and sits at the head of another tight group at the top of the points table with Marc de Hass in second place and the 2008 Olympic Gold medalist, Paul Goodison (GBR) in third overall. Just out of the top three are the very up and coming 49er combination of Peter Burling and Blair Tuke. They are in fourth overall after scoring 3rd and 4th places in their fleet, in the split fleet event. Conditions were predicted to be perfect for sailing with fresh southwesterly breezes prevailing for the whole of the racing - a stark contrast to the light airs of the previous Olympic venue in Qingdao, China. However the reality was that the breeze while blowing in the 12-16kt range was rather unstable, making for tricky sailing conditions. The remainder of the NZL Sailing team got off to a rather mediocre start at the Skandia Sail for Gold regatta. Several placed at the top end of their fleet in one of the races, but couldn't back up this performance is subsequent races. However at the end of the first day New Zealand has two crews leading their events, and another two crews in the top eight overall in the eight events scored. Olympic champion Tom Ashley had a disastrous start to the regatta with a 19th place, the second race for the Blue fleet was not started, and no overall placings were available for the Mens RS:X A second New Zealand competitor JP Tobin got off to a solid start in the Blue fleet (same as Ashley) scoring a sixth place in the only race sailed.
