'Mick Unwin skipper of first Sunferries Magnetic Island Race Week 2009 entry Fuzzy Logic'

When entries opened for the third annual Sunferries Magnetic Island Race Week to be held in September, Townsville sailor Michael Unwin was quick to jump online and register for the regatta. Unwin, who has previously done a lot of 505 dinghy sailing, has recently launched his sports boat Fuzzy Logic, a Colson 8 metre trailer sailor. Unwin is looking forward to the challenge of competing on 'home ground' where he will take on the likes of 2008 Sunferries Magnetic Island IRC runner up, Leon Thomas’ Thompson 7 Guilty Pleasures. 'I’ve competed in the regatta for the past two years on Akarana in the racing divisions but I am really looking forward to being able to compete with my own boat in the Sports Boats. It’s a different type of sailing, much faster and adrenalin packed' Unwin said. ‘I’ve sailed with Leon before and I'm looking forward to challenging Guilty Pleasures. ‘We are expecting to be faster upwind, downwind we are heavier but we have more sail area. ‘While we launched Fuzzy Logic some weeks ago, we’ve had her back in the shed doing some final modifications. We are looking forward to getting her tuned and by the time of Magnetic Island in September, we will hopefully be ready to give people a run for their money. ‘Next season we will be keen to take Fuzzy Logic south to race at Meridien Marinas Airlie Beach Race Week and after that maybe even at Skandia Geelong Week in Victoria.’ With competitor numbers expected to reach 50 boats, and significant interest from local and regional Sports Boat crews, event organisers are looking forward to including this division in the Sailing Program for the first time in 2009. In response to growing interest the regatta will also benefit from the addition of a Multihull division in 2009. Multihulls are a popular type of boat and are often overlooked in some regattas, having to compete among larger fleets with the monohull competitors. Event Coordinator, Stephanie Cairns said the addition of the Multihull division will offer those with multihulls the option to sail courses better suited to their boats, making it a more competitive regatta for everyone. Other divisions include IRC Racing, Performance Handicap Racing, Cruising with Spinnaker and Cruising Non Spinnaker bringing the divisions on offer to a total of six. The regatta will take place from the 4th to the 8th of September and will be based at Peppers Blue on Blue, Magnetic Island, with plenty of opportunities for spectators to take in the racing action. Competitors can register their boat online at www.magneticislandraceweek.com.au or register their availability as a crew member through 'Crew Register', a new online service via the event website.
