Splash Worlds 2010- PredictWind.com Forecast

by Nathan May on 6 Jan 2010
PredictWind.com Wind Map showing variable winds at Takapuna Beach 6th Jan 1100hrs - Splash Worlds 2010 SW
Sunny skies with light variable winds making way to a north-easterly sea breeze can be expected for the Splash Worlds at Takapuna today.

Wed 6th Jan
Light variable winds under 4 knots are forecast for Takapuna this morning, meaning racing is unlikely to kick off until later this afternoon. Both of PredictWind's models are forecasting variable winds with a north-easterly sea breeze picking up later in the afternoon, however the models are predicting the sea breeze to kick in at different times.

One of PredictWind's models is showing variable winds with a southwesterly of 10-12 knots kicking in at 1100hrs. After 1300hrs the light variable winds should return until 1700hrs when a northerly wind of 11-15 knots should fluctuate between a northerly and a north-easterly until 2100hrs.

The other model shows variable winds until 1100hrs when a north-easterly sea breeze should gradually build from 7 knots to 18 knots over the afternoon, making for some interesting racing.

Thur 7th Jan
Thursdays conditions should be more consistent for the start of the final series. Sailors can expect overcast conditions with north-easterly winds for the majority of the day. Winds of 15-16 knots can be expected at 0900hrs with 12-15 knot winds expected around midday. The winds are expected to peak at 18 knots at around 1800hrs. One of the models also shows a shift to the north at 1500hrs for the remainder of the day.

PredictWind combines sophisticated wind prediction technology with local topography maps to generate the highest resolution marine forecast available. The forecasts scale down to an incredible 1km resolution, allowing local winds such as sea breezes and topographical features like mountains and headlands to be factored into the calculations of the model resulting in a more accurate and location specific forecast.
