Spirit of Bermuda crosses finish line - Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge

'Spirit of Bermuda - Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge'    Sail Training International
Three more vessels have crossed the Tenerife finish line: Spirit of Bermuda (Bermuda), Jolie Brise (UK) and Urania (Netherlands).

Spirit of Bermuda crossed the line in the early hours of this morning at 0257 GMT, with Urania crossing a few hours later at 0611 GMT. Jolie Brise crossed just before the 1400 GMT reporting time at 1358 GMT today. The remaining vessels still on the water, Kruzenshtern (Russia), Etoile (France), Belle Poule (France), Tecla (Netherlands) and Xsaar (Belgium), are all due to cross the line later this evening with Belle Poule likely to be the last.

The Dutch vessel Tecla remains in first place overall on corrected time with Kruzenshtern (Russia) in second - both these vessels still have 18 miles to the finish line. Jolie Brise (UK) is currently in third. Belle Poule has the furthest to go and has 44 miles to go and is expected to cross the line at around 2130 GMT tonight.

In the group that contains the Class C and D vessels, Rona II has held onto first place with Urania in second and now Xsaar moving up into third place, pushing Peter von Danzig into fourth. This may seem confusing but it is the ‘Time Correction Factors’ of the vessels that dictates their placings on corrected time, which means Peter von Danzig may have been first across the line but she would have needed to sail faster still in order to increase her placing on corrected time.

Please note that the results are provisional and will not be confirmed until all declaration forms have been received later next week.

The wind has now picked up considerably at around 12kts, helping the remainder of the fleet across the line. The majority of the vessels are taking the opportunity offered by their early finishing to tour around the Canary Islands before heading into Tenerife for 14 May and the start of the four day festival.

A final race report will be posted tomorrow after all the vessels have crossed the finish line.
