Spindrift 2 a déclenché le chrono de la Route de la Découverte

Spindrift 2, le plus grand trimaran de course au monde a franchi ce mercredi 30 octobre à 15 heures, 19 minutes, 34 secondes heure TU (16 heures, 19 minutes, 34 secondes heure française), la ligne de départ de la Route de la Découverte, à la poursuite du record sur la distance Cadix - San Salvador aux Bahamas, via les Canaries, établi en 2007 par Franck Cammas et le Maxi trimaran Groupama 3.

Dona Bertarelli, Yann Guichard et leurs douze hommes d'équipage devront franchir la ligne d'arrivée avant Jeudi 7 novembre, à 02 heures, 17 minutes et 27 secondes TU (à 03 heures,17 minutes, 27 secondes heure française), pour améliorer le temps référence actuel de 7 jours 10 heures 58 minutes et 53 secondes, ( à 21,70 noeuds de moyenne). Après quatre mois de prise en main, toute l'équipe Spindrift racing aborde avec cette tentative une nouvelle dimension dans l'aventure collective initiée par Dona et Yann. Cette Route de la Découverte constitue en effet une première pour le trimaran sur la distance et une première aventure transatlantique pour Dona Bertarelli. Entourée d'un équipage de haute volée, subtile alchimie d'hommes expérimentés et de jeunes talents, la navigatrice suisse va bénéficier d'une « bonne » fenêtre météo.

En stand by à Portimao dans le sud du Portugal depuis le 7 octobre, Spindrift 2 profite aujourd'hui de la première opportunité sérieuse à se présenter après un long épisode dépressionnaire sur le proche Atlantique. Le maxi trimaran va plonger dès les premiers milles de course dans un fort flux de secteur nord qui va le propulser vers Gran Canaria, marque qu'il laissera à tribord après avoir effectué un certain nombre d'empannages sur une mer toujours agitée par les récentes successions de coups de vent. 'Le bateau est prêt, l'équipage est prêt, et l'excitation du départ nous a progressivement gagné' raconte Dona Bertarelli. 'Une belle fenêtre météo se présente au terme de trois semaines d'intenses préparations. Les conditions sont réunies sur l'Atlantique pour que Spindrift 2 accroche ce record. Il reste très long dans sa distance et il demeure bien naturellement encore quelques incertitudes tout au long du parcours' explique Yann ; 'Si la situation s'est éclaircie en ce qui concerne la zone d'arrivée aux Bahamas, avec ce vent de nord bien soutenu, il nous faudra composer avec un col barométrique au terme du cinquième ou sixième jour de course, une zone de transition à savoir intelligemment gérer…'

Spindrift 2 va donc dès les tout premiers milles affronter des conditions de mer difficiles, 'Rien d'insurmontable' assure Dona, 'mais de la mer et des creux peu favorables à la très haute vitesse… '. Le vent sera portant, un peu trop dans l'axe de la route du trimaran, et c'est en tirant des bords de portant que les hommes de Yann et Dona vont, au bout d'une trentaine d'heures scandés par de nombreux empannages, rallier Gran Canaria ; 'Nous serons alors proches des côtes de Mauritanie' poursuit Dona, 'et il nous faudra être vigilant au trafic, embarcations de pêche, et autres caboteurs… d'autant que la lune sera totalement absente. Ces premières heures seront stressantes et mobiliseront toute l'attention et la concentration de l'équipage. Nous nous attendons à ne guère prendre de repos et à ne pas pouvoir respecter les rythmes de quart préalablement décidés, tout le monde sera sur le pont!' Suivront trois belles journées d'alizé, durant lesquelles Spindrift 2 pourra donner sa pleine mesure. « C'est là, et seulement à partir de là, que nous serons vraiment sereins' précise Yann Guichard.

'Notre route passera par le nord afin de conserver le meilleur angle au vent.' S'ouvrira ensuite un chapitre hautement stratégique de cette course contre la montre avec la quête du meilleur passage d’un système à l'autre. 'La collaboration et les échanges entre notre routeur à terre Richard Silvani, Erwan Israel (navigateur) et moi-même seront intenses' précise Yann. 'C'est la partie du jeu la plus incertaine et la plus passionnante 'insiste Dona. 'C'est la phase du parcours qui recèle le plus d'inconnues, et il faudra se montrer inspiré pour conserver toutes nos chances…'

Cette Route de la Découverte constitue donc le premier grand défi océanique de Spindrift 2 et de ses quatorze hommes et femmes d'équipage, déjà vainqueurs (en temps réel) l’été dernier de la Rolex Fastnet Race. Si la vigilance à la sécurité demeure le crédo de Dona et Yann, l'envie d'en découdre et de conclure ces trois longues semaines de stand by par une cavalcade victorieuse irradie chez chacun des 12 hommes d'équipage explique Dona. 'Nous partons pour appliquer tous les préceptes mis en place depuis des semaines, soins aux manœuvres, bonne gestion du matériel et des hommes, communication entre les quarts… sécurité. Ce record est très long, comparé au record de l'Atlantique Nord (3 jours 19 heures nda), et il va falloir être bon dans la durée…' Un record vécu comme une aventure collective par un groupe choisi et formé sur son talent, mais aussi sur sa capacité à bien vivre en mer, à bien vivre la mer. 'C'est une fierté pour Dona et moi de partir dans ce premier voyage, dans cette première aventure pour le collectif Spindrift racing,' souligne Yann. 'C'est ma 11ème traversée de l'Atlantique, et tout me semble différent. La pression est positive et si gérer un tel groupe n'est pas anodin, cette aventure partagée est pleine du charme des grandes premières. Remporter ce challenge serait une belle récompense pour tous les membres de l’équipe, embarquée comme terrestre, qui a œuvré pour ce projet…'
