Spiked leads Manly Junior Nationals

On Friday 4th of January the third heat of the Manly Junior National Championships were held in a large swell and chop in the entry to Middle Harbour. The wind was from the east being a brisk 15 to 20 knots at the start but died away to only 6 to 8 knots for the last few legs making for difficult sailing in the sea conditions.

In the Open Fleet Disqualified - Ash (skipper) and Daniel (crew) Hayworth of Manly 16ft SSC led from the first mark to the finish to record a great win.

While they had a buffer allowing them to sail their own race the competition for second and third place was intense. Four different boats rounded a mark of the course in second place with no boat managing to stay in second place for two marks in a row.

Middle Harbour, Cronulla and Manly boats all took their turns before the consistency of Spiked - Paul Darmanin and Lucy Copeland shone through again to record a well sailed second place. Third went to Another Dark and Stormy - Billy Ditmarsch and Sam Holmes also of Manly 16ft SSC.

In the Novice Fleet Black Cat - Joh and Francis MacDonald of Vaucluse 12ft Sailing Club again showed excellent speed in the softening wind to gain the lead in the last few hundred metres to record a second line honours victory.

They ran down Two Chances - Ben Bannon and Kate MacDonald of CSC who had sailed well to lead from the first mark but had to settle on second place at the finish. In third was Cheetah - Dominic Ellis and Jamie Hargrave of M16ftSSC who also sailed a fast last leg to overtake On Fire, who had rounded the last mark in third place but also struggled for speed in the softening wind.

So now we have three races sailed and Spiked, with their excellent consistency (2, 1 and 2) have again strengthened their position and they are opening a good points lead. While the battle for final honours is still not over it will require someone to step up in Saturday's two races otherwise come Monday it may be that the rest of the fleet will be focused on second place.
