South Australia Cherub Season - Re-birth of Cherubs

by Michael Tozer on 18 Mar 2013
SA's Ashleigh Emery and Haydn Trenorden on Quick Spoon - SA Cherub come and try day Michael Tozer
South Australia Cherub Season. A beautiful sunny day of 10-12 knots and sailors of various backgrounds join the reinvigorated South Australian Cherub fleet for a day of high speed thrills. The come and try day is the icing on the cake of the 2012-2013 re-birth of Cherubs in SA.

The 2013 come and try day aimed to provide all sailors with the opportunity to experience Cherubs and their potential. Youths prevailed at the event to add to an already strong youth presence in the class, nationally and in SA. Prospective sailors enjoyed perfect conditions off Largs Bay Sailing Club as they quickly learnt the ropes. A few comical spills aside, it wasn't long before the newbie’s got the hang of it all and achieved some great speeds. Not even the smell of a free BBQ lunch was enough to get them off the water as all participants stayed out for over two hours. The association aims to foster continuing interest in the class through the use of the association boat, Pocket Full of Kryptonite, which is available for regular use.

The come and try day marks a new beginning for Cherubs in SA. The 2012-13 season also saw the first Cherub State Championship since 2005-2006. Glen Emery and Grant Edwards (Quick Spoon) took out the honours in a very competitive fleet which experienced countless lead changes each race.

New Cherub sailors on Boogie Nights and Kryptonite constantly found themselves in battle for the lead at the first mark each race, but experience paid off on Quick Spoon who proved consistency is the key to win. With half of the fleet new to Cherubs in 2012-2013, things are starting to heat up for the class, predominantly based at Largs Bay Sailing Club.

The 2012-2013 season also saw four South Australian Cherubs take on the National Championship held in Belmont, NSW. Interest in the class continues to build as new boats are purchased from interstate, creating the potential for SA’s biggest fleet ever. Things are looking promising as South Australia aims to become a strong contingent for the 2014-2015 National Championship which it will host.

A full racing calendar is planned for the 2013-2014 season including fleet races in new locations throughout SA and, of course, state Cherub Australia
