Skenes Creek now with better access for anglers

by Marc Ainsworth on 18 Jun 2013

Thanks to a $32,000 project funded by recreational fishing licence fees, recreational anglers casting a line at Skenes Creek, near Apollo Bay, now have better access to the water.

Member for Polwarth Terry Mulder said the Association of Geelong and District Angling Clubs and local organisations had constructed steps and railings from the Great Ocean Road to Snapper Rocks, using a grant from the Victorian Coalition Government.

'The Coalition Government recognises the significant contribution recreational fishing makes to the state’s economy. Fishing is a popular pastime for over 720,000 Victorians and supports regional businesses ranging from hotels to bait and tackle stores,' Mr Mulder said.

'The Government believes improving angler access to productive fishing spots, as we have achieved with this project, is a terrific way to re-invest licence fees.

'Improving access is a priority for the Recreational Fishing Grants Program and the Victorian Government’s $16 million Recreational Fishing Initiative, whether its steps down to a rock platform, a new platform or maintaining existing access tracks.'

Mr Mulder said the formal steps and railings were a huge improvement on the track that existed beforehand, which became slippery when wet and difficult to negotiate.

'It’s a great spot for land-based anglers chasing snapper, Australian salmon, silver trevally, sweep, leatherjacket, wrasse and mullet,' Mr Mulder said.

'Signage and a life saving ring have also been installed as part of the project.'
