Consistent sailing in fresh breezes has placed the Tasmanian crew of Ric Buchanan, Andrea Declerk and Nick Johnston with a two point lead after three heats of the National Sharpie Australian championships on Hobart's River Derwent.

Sailing One Hump or Two, Buchanan and his crew have handled the conditions on their home waters faultlessly, with placings so far of 2-4-2, giving them a two point margin from South Australians Malcolm Higgins, Sam Sanderson and
Andrew Chisholm, whose placings with Blur have been 5-2-3.

Third overall, two points further back, are Queenslanders Andrew Wells, Jason Beebe and Sam Reid, who won the opening heat with Jess and have followed this with a sixth and fifth.

The other heat winners have been All Scoobed Out (Dave Higgins) and Bread Run (Jason Heritage) both from South Australia.

The Lightweight Sharpie is an adult-crewed, high performance centreboard dinghy which derives its name from its narrow, hard-chine hull that was developed from the International 12 square metre class used in the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games.

A fleet of 27 boats from Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania is contesting the seven heat series, with heat four scheduled to start at 2pm tomorrow, Saturday, 2 January.
