Second time unlucky at 3.7 Nationals, Evans Bay

'Code Flags N over A - no more racing (again) today at the 2010 3.7 Nationals, Evans Bay'    Evans Bay YMBC

The second day of racing for 3.7 Class National Championship being hosted by the Evans Bay Yacht and Motorboat Club were postponed and eventually cancelled with winds in excess of 30 knots.

The weather got wind of the early 9am race start and it was blowing from the get-go.

To keep everyone amused Kevin Hollland from Charteris Bay (that is in the South Island) went out for a sail in high winds to show us how they do their gybes in high winds. If our well lubricated PR machine has not suffered spontaneous combustion there should be new photographs of today's effort on the Evans Bay Yacht and Motorboat Club website too.

Kevin had some fun, flying round in a cloud of spray.

Then while waiting for the sun to get over the yardarm, Rhys Johnston (current national champ) brought out his family's blokart and a group of jesters started sailing around the carpark by the Evans Bay Coastguard building. Rhys managed to flip the blokart with the 4sqm sail up ripping it. Wind was in the range of 35 knots. Then they put up the 3sqm sail and after a lot of very fast rides, Gavin Auld (333 Torbay Sailing Club) managed to roll it and rip that sail too. Sun was over the yardarm at that point so they all shook their heads and retired back to the Clubhouse for sustenance..

The good news is that the 35 knots Northerly is meant to change to a 35knot Southerly tomorrow, so there is some chance of a race or five in the changeover. The bad news is that we still need five races and that our spare day (Monday) is forecast 40 knots. Ahhh, that is yacht racing..

The new cunning plan is to race in a paddling pool course area just off the end of the runway with an M course to fit in the tight space to try to get a result!
