Seaweed Soup Regatta - A bit of a bite

by Erik Simonson on 5 Jan 2015
Jason Halloway's Knarrly Boo got a bang from the race deck, denoting their race 3 victory! - Midwinters - 2014-15 The 44 Manuel Fagundes Seaweed Soup Regatta. Erik Simonson/ pressure-drop.us http://www.pressure-drop.us
The 44 Manuel Fagundes Seaweed Soup Regatta - The first Major Midwinter Regatta of the 2015 Sailing Season rolled into the San Francisco Bay with a bit of a bite. After months of above average temps, a blast of Arctic air settled in at the end of 2014 and decided to hang around into the New Year.

The Golden Gate Yacht Club's Manuel Fagundes Seaweed Soup, race three was greeted with good but brisk oscillating northerlies in the mid to high teens for the 11:30AM first gun. Combined with a high tide rolling into a generous ebb, the race committee's selection of a Blackaller to Harding to Fort Mason to Harding back Mason then finish, an 8.7nm course 18 to for the big boats in PHRF 1-3. The set up made for a very fast first leg, and interesting tactics in the post Harding decision making. With the strong ebb and the puffy winds working their way from the gaps in the Marin hills and around Angel Island, crews needed some good anticipation and hydro awareness and perhaps, some luck for success.

For the boats in PHRF 4, 5 and 6, a 5.5 nm course 15, which led the across the river and back just once, Blackaller to Harding then home after rounding Mason. As for the Knaars and Folkboats, the RC thought they were giving them a break, staying out of the bigger part of the building ebb and staying along the shore with a six nm course 6 double sausage with marks off Hyde Street Pier and Crissy Field, but, as luck would have it, the wind would lighten for their second rounding of the Crissy Mark as the ebb remained, making that rounding more of an adventure than planned.

The fleet overall was healthy, with 53 of the 75 original registrations showing up, you can probably attribute the absentees to the weather or the remaining days of a long holiday vacation period as the culprit. The most noticeable of fleet reduction was the J-111's, which sailed with just three boats in their fleet, Madmen, Bad Dog and Swiftness appearing to represent.

A notable newcomer to the fleet in PHRF 1, was the RYC Super Secret Syndicate aboard the powder blue SC 50 Adrenaline. This being their first official race, the crew of Del Olsen, Gail Yando, Ron Tostensen, Ted Rogers, Claire Arbor, Simon Winer, Jen Vizsku, Gerry Lampert and Gregory Mitchell kept their expectations in alignment with the reality of the situation. 'We didn't hit nobody, and nobody hit us' Said Del 'No point traded, nothing broke, nobody got hurt and we had a nice, if not chilly day, some tasty sandwiches and cold beer at the end of the day, and we even got back to the dock before the tide dropped completely, so it was all good.' We had some pretty nice straight line speed but our mark roundings are a bit rough and with all the new to us sails, we have a pretty steep learning curve ahead'. Greg Mitchell added 'We didn't want to scare all the competition away on our first regatta.'.... Indeed...

The crew of Adrenaline comes from primarily skiff and small boat sailing backgrounds, and Del indicates that locating some local talent with bigger boat experience is in the plans, but he is realistic that many of the desirable offshore, bigger boat sailors are generally committed to other programs, so it may take some time for that to develop. They sailed with just nine on Saturday, and Del notes a crew of 10 to 11 is probably more realistic, and with a few co-owners whom did not make this event filling in, that will make things easier as time moves forward. The next schedule event for Adrenaline will be the Corinthian in a couple weeks time...
