Scotchmans Hill Div 1 Results IRC, AMS, YV and S38

While Skandia Geelong Week’s Scotchmans Hill series started with fair winds on Wednesday and booming weather for the Passage race, the weather softened for the last two days. The first attempt at a race start this morning was abandoned, with rain falling vertically and two knots of wind. Just before the time cut off for a race, conditions improved and the fleet ghosted around for a final race in the series.

Given the terrible bushfires that have raged across the Victorian countryside this week, no one was complaining about the rain.

Luckily the selective memory all sailors possess will have 'etched' the fabulous down wind ride, experienced by more than 300 boats from Williamstown to Corio Bay, on Thursday.

The Scotchman’s Hill Division One fleet started on one line, but was scored under a range of handicapping systems on IRC, AMS, VY and Sydney 38.

On IRC handicap Ray Roberts Quantum Race won the Scotchmans Hill series Division 1, from Steven David's’ Wild Joe with Geelong local Graeme Troon XLR8 third.

On AMS, Australian Measurement system a Victorian handicapping system which pre-dated the widespread use of the IRC system, the overall winner was Robert Hick’s super fast little Hick 30 Toecutter, who won on a count back from Don and Helen Cameron’s Reichel Pugh 36 Smooth Criminal with Frank Hammond’s Radford 35 Horizon Sprint, third.

On Performance handicap, Sandringham sailor Andy Allsep’s colourful Bull 12 Bullistic, with two wins and a second in the six race series, was too strong from Christian Jackson’s Eliliot 47 Prowler. In third place Tasmania’s Stephen Keal sailed Skandia Cyclone completed the placings.

In the Sydney 38 Class, the old master Lou Abraham and his Challenge team once again held out his closest rival, Bruce Taylor aboard Chutzpah.

Tonight, its party time at Royal Geelong Yacht Club, who have hosted another great regatta. Tomorrow we will see the Invitational Race for selected IRC boats sailing on Corio Bay.
