In the International Cadet Australian championship, Sandy Bay Sailing Club’s Sam Teidemann and his crew Hugo Allision yesterday claimed the title on Hobart’s River Derwent. Teideman, 16, and his seven-year-old crew will lead the 14-boat Australian team into the World champoionships which start tomorrow, with Sandy Bay Sailing Club also hosting them on the Derwent. While they did not win a race, Teidemann and Allison sailed a consistent series to comfortably take the Australian title from the Victorians Liam Robinson and Nathan Field from Royal Geelong Yacht Club. Third place went to defending champion Samantha Bailey and her new crew, Laura Cooper, from the Sandy Bay Sailing Club. The regatta was plagued with inconsisent winds, with one day’s racing lost and only one race being sailed on the final day – a long, tough race in a strong tide and not much wind. Overall winner of the Australian championship was the Ukrainian crew of Oleksandr Izarov and Andriy Kalinchuck but they were not eligible to claim the Australian title. They will, however, be strong contenders for the World championship with a boat they have named Tasmania Devil.
