In glorious sunshine on Geelong’s Corio Bay, the 2007 International Cadet Australian Championships started with 93 entrants representing Clubs from across Australia.

Two races were held with both going to Tasmania’s Sandy Bay Sailing Club entrants (SBSC), a club well known for their strong representation at National and International level.

Race one proved to be quite fluky with very light 5-8 knots of unsteady NE breeze. It was a long and frustrating race for some crews. A good start was needed, and many were locked in irons unable to get clear air or safe passage through the fleet. It took some crews nearly an hour to complete the first leg, when at times the fleet was spread over 2 1/2 legs of the Olympic triangle course.

The ‘Stolen Pig’ skippered by Douglas Sheppard and his crew Josh Brown from Sandy Bay Sailing Club, came out on top to take race one. Second went to SBSC’s Thomas Kennedy and Ellie Chesterman on ‘Pour Quoi’ with Sandringham’s ‘Odyssey’ skippered by Joel Aulich with crew Jarad Cavanagh third.

Similar to WA’s Fremantle Doctor, the Corio sea breeze is well known to come in mid afternoon during summer and like clockwork it came in at 3pm with a very welcome anf steady 12 –14 knots of SE breeze. The frustrations of slow and unpredictable racing was all forgotten as the Cadets prepared for Race two, which started at 3.45pm.

With a clean start under their belts most of the fleet went to the right of the course hugging Limeburner’s Point which proved to be a good tactical move. A windward leeward course had been set with SBSC’s Capricious and Pour Quoi battling for top spot at each mark.

There was a match racing duel to the finish line Lucy Shepard and her crew Lydia Newton on Capricious continued to tack and cover Pour Quoi (Thomas Kennedy and Ellie Chesterman) up the final leg, with the girls very happily going over the line first.

Third home was Alec Bailey with Samantha Bailey on Red Baron.

Racing continues today, with a much needed lay day on New Year’s Day.
