Sam King's unique Tasmanian Titles double
|
RYCT Dinghy Group member Sam King has become the first young sailor to win both the Sabot and Optimist dinghy championships, taking out the Opti title at Beauty Point last weekend. He has added the two single-handed titles to a third overall in this season’s Sabot nationals in Melbourne and a seventh in the Optimist Australian championship on the Derwent in January. The 12-year-old had a cracking weekend of sailing at the Optimist championships, conducted by Tamar Yacht Club and attracting 25 boats in the Open fleet and 11 in the Green fleet. In the Open fleet, Sam notched up a scorecard to 2-1-1-1-1-4-4-2 for a net eight points, scoring a comfortable title win from TYC’s Will Evans who finished on 12 points with Sandy Bay Sailing Club’s Hugo Hamilton and Hugh Hickling third and fourth on 16 and 18 points respectively. Will won the first and last races while Hugo came home first in races 6 and 7. Fourth and fifth places went to two TYC entrants, Tom Booth finishing with 31 points and Chloe Fisher on 40 points, and also first girl skipper. The Open champion drew competitors from around the State although Sam King was the only RYCT representative in the fleet. In the Green fleet, Port Dalrymple Yacht Club’s Thomas Moreton finished a clear winner on 13 points, winning four of the seven races. Harry Booth from TYC took second place on 14 points with a consistent series, beating Jacob McConaghy from Kettering Yacht Club on a countback of placings. A countback was needed to decide fourth and fifth, with Finn Buchanan from SBSC finishing with three straight wins to oust Jess Chesterman from fourth. Sam is now seeking sponsorship assistance to contest the New Zealand Optimist championship at Easter and the Asian Optimist title in Japan in August.
