Sail-World DNA's 10th birthday

When web pioneer Aaron Goldwater started the first sailing news website in Australia a decade ago this week, in April 1997, he could not have imagined what would happen ten years on.

We took over Sailing-online in 2002 and it became part of Sail-World which had actually started in 2000. So we certainly have 10 year old web DNA. In web terms that is about 100 years.

We recognizing that online media would one day take a more significant role but we'd no idea the dominant role, online news and information would take.

Today sailors have a choice; they can follow in-depth event coverage on line, or wait for a couple of months and read about it in a sailing magazines.

What a choice, same day online, with results with big pictures, or wait for 60 or 90 days.

It’s not hard, today’s audience has voted with their mice.

Today 30,000 + Sail-World’s America’s Cup newsletters have gone go to a world wide audience. Why is our audience growing so rapidly? It’s the speed of online news delivery and the efforts of our editorial writers and key event contributors. We have Bob Fisher and Gerald New providing coverage from Spain, we have Lyn Fitzpatrick in Miami, Richard Gladwell in Auckland, Guy Nowell in Hong Kong and our cruising Editor Nancy Knudsen, who today is in Las Perlas off the Panamanian Coast.

The online Sail-World audience in the Asia Pacific is now twice the size of all the sailing magazines in the region combined.

Of course this is not just happening in Sailing. Our Powerboat-world newsletters are being very well received, going to more than 20,000 readers. Next week on Powerboat World we will be featuring the biggest boat at Sydney International Boat Show so far registered, a glorious the 105 foot Azimut.

Such has been the uptake of online media that the Editor of the New York Times says that with the current speed to technology change they may not be using printing a paper edition in 10 years time. Already magazine advertising is falling behind the online advertising market as advertisers follow their audience.

A lot of sea miles until then but in the mean time you can enjoy new now and bigger pictures. In 2007 Sail-World will deliver its new wide image format, wider than a double A4.

At this rate of progress we expect to be offering salt water spray resistant keyboards to Sail-World readers by the beginning of the second quarter of 2008.

Volvo Ocean Race to be contested over longest distance in history
Tough, intense, and featuring almost three times as much Southern Ocean sailing as the previous edition The 43-year-old race around the world – the ultimate ocean marathon, pitting the sport’s best sailors, against each other across the world’s toughest oceans – will start from Alicante in late 2017 with a 700nm sprint to Lisbon, Portugal that will provide the first test of the form guide.

Volvo Ocean Race adds full Southern Ocean Leg and 5000nm to new course
Volvo Ocean Race has announced a new course for the 2017/18 round the world event. Several major changes are planned including a return to a full Southern Ocean leg, and the addition of a massive Leg 5 of 13,300nm - the longest leg ever sailed in the Volvo Ocean Race. By way of comparison a minimum circumnavigation around the planet is approximately 21,600nm to be recognised as, a record for the course by WSSRC.
