Sail Townsville - Sailing's next premier event

This August, Queensland’s newest major event, Sail Townsville will be held in North Queensland. Sail Townsville, a first of its kind ten day International Sailing Regatta and Festival, was officially launched last night at the Brisbane Entertainment and Exhibition Centre. Attendees included Yachting Queensland, President Ken Hurling and Chairman of Sail Townsville, Paul Travis whom are both passionate and excited about the future prospects of this unique event. 'This event will make history', Mr Travis said. Sail Townsville, which will be held annually, comprises the existing Sealink Magnetic Island Race Week, ‘Townsville Alive’ a Community, Arts and Entertainment Festival and a Yachting Queensland Multi-Class Regatta combined with Discover Sailing opportunities for primary school aged children and the community. Yachting Queensland will have a major involvement in orchestrating this event and believe Townsville’s pristine waters will provide an ideal destination for this regatta and future championship events. 'The opportunity to have world class athletes rubbing shoulders with Townsville’s primary school aged children, in an activity all can participate in on the Strand is a major driving force behind me and the Yachting Queensland team’s motivation.' Mr Hurling said. This event will help promote the sport of sailing by providing exposure across all levels of the sport, predicted to increase sailing membership and participation. The event includes a Queensland Sailing Conference, Discover Sailing Week, North Queensland Youth Championships, Boat Shows and School Events, all aimed at reaching a large demographic of people and expanding to opportunities for the North Queensland community to Discover Sailing. This unique event is already close to securing exciting events such as the F18 Cats, Tasars, Lasers, Windsurfers and Kite Surfers who recognise the aptitude of the event. Sail Townsville will take place August 24- September 3 2013. If you would like to be involved in this major event please contact Ben Callard or Lyndsey Wessel at Yachting Queensland.
