Sail Canada and CORK/Sail Kingston announce enhanced partnership

Sail Canada and CORK/Sail Kingston are happy to reveal an enhanced partnership between organizations to deliver the Sail Canada Youth National and Senior National Championships in Kingston, in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Sail Canada and CORK have worked together to deliver many events over the last number of years and are pleased to have an official agreement recognizing the work that both organizations do. Together Sail Canada and CORK will continue to promote and work to further develop the vibrancy of competitive sailing in Canada.

In 2014 CORK will host the Sail Canada Youth National Championship, followed by the Sail Canada Senior Nationals taking place during CORK OCR. Both annual events are planned to take place in Kingston, hosted by CORK over the next three years.

Both organizations acknowledge the valuable support of Sport Canada and Heritage Canada in developing Sail Canada’s performance strategy and the execution of the Sail Canada Championships.

In 1969 a group of enthusiastic sailors decided to establish CORK to host international sailing events off Kingston. The area offers some of the best fresh-water sailing in the world, excellent wind and wave conditions, and a short distance from shore to the race courses. Leading up to the 1976 Olympics, the CORK regatta offered excellent training for sailors, coaches and officials and has since become a fixture on the international calendar. CORK has remained a not-for profit organisation managed almost exclusively by volunteers, hosting championships for international classes out of the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour for more than 40 years. The CORK annual events include youth, development Olympic and recreational racing classes and sailors of all ages.

With a total participation of more than 1400 boats annually, it is a magnificent sailing festival, attracting sailors not only from North America but from all over the world.

Established in 1931, Sail Canada (formerly known as the Canadian Yachting Association) is the national governing body for the sport of sailing. The Association promotes sailing and power boating through collaboration with our partners, the Provincial Sailing Associations, member clubs, schools, and many individual stakeholders.
