Southern California Yachting Association Midwinter Regatta - Ray Godwin of Long Beach Yacht Club and his Farr 40, Temptress, team won their One-Design class while Art and Scott Melendres, also of LBYC, won their Cal 25, One-Time, team won their class Sunday in the 86th annual regatta, sponsored by SCYA with Long Beach Yacht Club hosting these two classes.
LBYC was one of 26 West Coast yacht clubs that hosted more than 600 boats in this annual event, traditionally an opportunity for local sailors to shake off the winter cobwebs and go racing.
With consistent breezes out of the south and southwest at six to twelve knots the phrase, 'perfect conditions,' was overheard on the docks throughout the weekend.
At the end of Saturday’s racing action, the Farr 40 fleet had Godwin in the lead, but only by one point with only a three point spread between the four boats.
For him to keep the lead and win the regatta he needed to be on his game… and he was, winning both of his races Sunday.
'It seemed like we had the wrong sails up for each rounding,' Godwin said smiling. 'Almost every weather leg in every race, we were not the first boat around (the mark).
'But it was fun and we so enjoyed ourselves. This was one of the most fun regattas we’ve done in some time.'
Art Melendres and his son Scott’s closest opponent in the Cal 25 class was Felix Basadre’s boat, Tiburon. Melendres had a one point lead over Basadre going into Sunday’s races. Basadre won the first Race Sunday… and Melendres won the second and final race of the regatta, thus keeping his one point lead and giving him the win in his class.
'You know,' Art said, 'I’m always humbled when I can win one of these regattas against a stellar competitor such as Felix.
'It came down to the final day and my crew’s work was absolutely outstanding. They were really terrific.
'I think the race committee did a fabulous job and the courses they set up were perfectly suited for our races.'
