SAP Extreme Sailing Team führt nach Tag 1 von Act 2 in Maskat (DEU)

Eine Flotte von 11 Extreme 40 Katamaranen hat am Eröffnunstag von Act 2 der globalen Extreme Sailing Series™ in Maskat ihre Rennen begonnen. Ein hart umkämpftes und im Ergebnis kaum vorhersagbares Event zeichnete sich dabei am Mittwoch ab: Die sieben Rennen sahen fünf unterschiedliche Sieger.

Das dänische SAP Extreme Sailing Team konnte sich dabei von den weniger konstant segelnden Mannschaften etwas absetzen. Die ersten acht Teams liegen aber nur 16 Punkte auseinander, so dass der morgige Tag spannende Wettfahrten erwarten lässt, in denen die Führenden versuchen werden, ihren Vorsprung auszubauen. „Das ist noch eine lange Regatta. Heute war nur der erste Tag, aber wir sind glücklich mit dem, was wir geleistet haben, und hoffen, dass weiter fortsetzen zu können', sagte Jes Gram-Hansen, Co-Skipper des SAP Extreme Sailing Team. Seine Erfolgsformel beschrieb er so: „Wenn du dich im Feld erst mal nach vorne geschoben hast, wird alles einfacher. Du bekommst freien Wind und baust deinen Vorsprung immer weiter und weiter aus. Darauf müssen wir uns morgen konzentrieren.'

SAP Extreme Sailing Team, Emirates Team New Zealand und The Wave, Muscat gewannen jeweils ein Rennen, Alinghi und Groupama konnten zwei Wettfahrten für sich entscheiden. Dabei blieb es bis zum letzten Rennen spannend, wer nach Tag eins vorne liegen würde. Die Flotte segelte auf dem offenen Meer und konnte ihr Können unter einem strahlenden arabischen Sonnenhimmel demonstrieren. Mit fünf bis sieben Knoten weht nur ein leichter Wind und jedes der Rennen, das aus zwei Runden bestand, dauerte knapp über 15 Minuten.

Land Rover als Main Partner der Series gab heute eine neue Partnerschaft mit dem österreichischen Red Bull Sailing Team als dessen offizieller „Team- und Fahrzeug-Partner' bekannt. Die britische Premium Automarke stärkt damit ihre bedeutende Rolle im professionellen Segelsport. Auf dem Wasser endete der Tag für das österreichische Boot mit den Doppel-Olympiasiegern Roman Hagara und Hans-Peter Steinacher als Führungskräften dagegen frustrierend. Vor dem abschließenden Rennen lagen die Österreicher noch punktgleich an der Spitze. Doch ein zehnter Platz in dieser Wettfahrt kostete viele Punkte, so dass das Team Tag eins auf Platz sechs abschloss – und einen weiteren Beweis dafür erbracht hatten, wie schnell die Karten auf dem Rennkurs neu gemischt werden können. Skipper Hagara sagte dazu: „Die Teams müssen morgen konstanter segeln. Man braucht hier einfach einen guten Start, denn es ist sehr schwierig nach vorne zu segeln, wenn du beim Start schon hinten liegst. Alle Teams sind sehr stark, und deswegen liegen wir auch so dicht beieinander. Der Plan für alle Teams lautet für morgen: Bloß keine Fehler machen!'

Nach einem eher mäßigem Beginn konnten sich die beiden britischen Steuermänner im Feld deutlich steigern. Der vierfache Olympiasieger Ben Ainslie vom britischen Team J.P. Morgan und Paul Campbell-James von Gazprom Team Russia, der die Series schon zweimal gewonnen hat, schafften schließlich beide Platzierungen unter den Top 3. Campbell-James fasste den Tag so zusammen: „Wir hatten einige schlechte, aber auch ein paar gute Rennen – leider mehr schlechte als gute, was etwas frustrierend war. Wir nehmen aus dem heutigen Tag einiges Positives mit – unsere Geschwindigkeit vor dem Wind war deutlich verbessert, unser Speed am Wind fühlte sich ganz gut an und unsere Zusammenarbeit an Bord wird von Tag zu Tag besser. Für uns ist es sehr wichtig, dass morgen wieder vor dem Wind gestartet wird, dann gibt es mehr Wege, sich als erster an die Startlinie zu schieben. Wir segeln nah am Ufer vor einem tollen, begeisterungsfähigen omanischen Publikum. Darauf freuen wir uns wirklich!'

Für Realteam war es ein schwieriger Tag. Der Mannschaft gelang es nicht, weiter auf der Erfolgswelle von Singapur zu segeln, wo sie vor drei Wochen noch Dritte geworden waren. Gleiches galt auch für das Team GAC Pindar, das zuletzt in der 18-Foot Skiff-Klasse große Erfolge gefeiert hatte. Die beiden Mannschaften wurden heute Zehnte und Elfte.

Auf der morgendlichen Pressekonferenz hatte Alinghi-Steuermann Morgan Larson vor den nationalen und internationalen Medien vorher gesagt: „Diese Veranstaltung wird ein echter Test und nur das beste Team wird am Ende vorne sein.' Noch sind drei Tag zu segeln, und jeder darf raten, wer am Ende im Stadion von Maskat zum Champion gekrönt wird.
