Rose Bowl Regatta - Point Loma does the math

Rose Bowl Regatta report.

Faced with blowing a 27-point lead and the championship in the 25th annual Rose Bowl Regatta late Sunday afternoon, Point Loma did the math.

Racing was cut short when the wimpy winds that had prevailed all weekend gasped their last, but B boat sailors Owen Paine and Shone Bowman faced a protest in the last race that would have dropped the team out of first place behind perennial rival Newport Harbor.

Instead, after checking the point totals, Coach Steve Hunt and the sailors chose to have Paine and Bowman do an RAF (Retired After Finishing) that cost them four fewer points than losing a protest. Thus, they nudged Newport Harbor by the narrowest of margins, 49 to 50, with Cathedral Catholic at 57 among the fleet of 27 in the Gold fleet.

'Good enough,' Laube said.

Georgetown University held onto its lead over College of Charleston to win the 26-boat college competition by six points. Palo Alto was top performing team in the high school Silver division.

The winners had one thing in common: All were strong in light winds---but all would prefer to race when it blows. The high school Gold and college fleets managed to sail only five of the 15 potential rounds. Much of their time was spent drifting on the water or waiting to swap boats on the beach.

Laube, a 17-year-old senior headed for Stanford, also said the event was key to many of the young sailors' futures.

'All of the college coaches come to this regatta, so it's a good regatta to do well in.'

Georgetown's Charlie Buckingham from Newport Beach was one of the many college sailors from Southern California, including his crew Ashley Phillips, B boat skipper Chris Barnard and his crew Sydney Bolger of Long Beach.

'It was a really short regatta,' Buckingham said, 'and it was tricky with the wind so light and shifting. We just chipped away.'

It was Buckingham's seventh Rose Bowl Regatta---four in high school and three in college.
