The Farr 40 Class Association today announced that the 2011 Rolex Farr 40 World Championship will take place February 23-26 at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron (RSYS), in Sydney, Australia. Immediately preceding the Worlds, the RSYS will host the Australian Championship from February 18-20.

'The Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron is known for hosting top-level sailing regattas, and we couldn’t be more pleased to return to Sydney for our Class’ 14th World Championship,' said Farr 40 Class President Jim Richardson (Boston, Mass. /Newport, R.I.), owner of three-time world champion Farr 40 Barking Mad (2009 - Porto Cervo; 2004 - San Francisco; 1998 – Miami). 'The Australian Farr 40 Class has a robust fleet from which we expect 12-14 Farr 40s. Along with 8-12 non-Australian entries, we expect to see over 20 Farr 40s in February.'

With a long history of collaboration with the Farr 40 Class, the RSYS counts among its members Guido Belgiorno-Nettis and Transfusion, a two-time Australian National Champion and runner-up at the 2010 Rolex Farr 40 Worlds, plus 2005 Rolex Farr 40 World champion Richard Perini and Evolution.

'We are proud to be hosting the Rolex Farr 40 World championship in February 2011,' said Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron Commodore Bill Wood. 'The Squadron is the home of one design yacht racing on Sydney Harbour, and we are located on the foreshore of one of the best harbors in the world. Sailing conditions in February are generally first class. We look forward to welcoming local and overseas crew entries to Sydney.'

2010 Rolex Farr 40 World Champion Nerone, owned by Massimo Mezzaroma and Antonio Sodo Migliori (Rome, ITA), is a confirmed entry as is a number of international teams all with Farr 40 class championships to their name. Helmut Jahn’s (Chicago, Ill, USA) Flash Gordon 6, the 2009 Rolex North American Champion, will join Doug Douglass’s (New York, N.Y.) Goombay Smash, the 2008 Rolex North American Champion; and European Class President and recent Audi Sardinia Cup champion Wolfgang & Angela Schaefer’s (Luneburg, GER) on Struntje Light.

'As anyone who has been to Sydney before can tell you, the beauty of our Sydney Harbour is unparalleled,' said Farr 40 Australian Class President Martin Hill, who, along with his wife Lisa, owns and campaigns Estate Master. 'February is the perfect time of year, being our summer, and we extend a warm invitation to every Farr 40 owner to visit Sydney and compete in the Australian Championship and Worlds.'

In addition to the World Cup, the winning skipper will be presented with a commemorative Rolex timepiece. The Corinthian Trophy will be presented to the best performing team that declares itself in the Corinthian category. Basically, those teams have a maximum of two professional sailors on board and a reduced number of new sails in the calendar year. Corinthian Trophy competitors race with the rest of the fleet, and owners who register for the Corinthian trophy are also eligible for winning overall event prizes.

Serving as Principal Race Officer will be Peter 'Luigi' Reggio, while Henry Menin will chair the International Jury.

The Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, founded in 1862, is one of Australia’s oldest yacht clubs. Located on the foreshores of Sydney Harbour, in Kirribilli, The Squadron provides its members with a first class venue to participate in one design and mixed fleet divisional racing. The Squadron also conducts a very active Youth Sailing program with over 100 participants sailing throughout the year

The Farr 40 Class maintains an extensive international schedule that revolves around regional fleets in the U.S., Australia, Southern Europe and the Nordic region with the annual Class 'crown jewel' – the Rolex Farr 40 World Championship. The 2010 Rolex Farr 40 World Championship took place April 21-24 at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic where Nerone was crowned champion. The Rolex Farr 40 World Championship is in its 14th year. The World Championship has been sailed in North America, Europe or Australia every year since the class was established in 1997.
