Richard Perini nomination for International Award |
Yachting Australia today announced their intention to nominate Richard Perini for the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award when nominations open later in the year. ‘Richard's achievements in keelboat racing over the past 12 months have been unsurpassed. To hold both the Mumm 30 and Rolex Farr 40 World Championship titles at the same time is a unique achievement. These two one-design International Classes offer the hardest and closest racing around. Yachting Australia is very proud to be able to nominate Richard Perini for the highest award in sailing. After all he has done, he simply deserves to win it.’ said Phil Jones, CEO of Yachting Australia. Yachting Australia Head Coach, Victor Kovalenko, on the dock and on the water during the Farr 40 World Championship and providing input to many of the Australia crews and coaches, echo's the sentiment. ‘Richard is a great sailor. He built a fantastic team around him, worked hard and positively and got the best possible outcome. This was a hard event to win. You had to be consistent and balanced in risk and courage. This is someone who knows what it takes to win in our sport. I would love to have more people with his dedication, commitment and spirit in the Olympic Classes.’ Yachting Australia National Olympic Squad member, Andrew Palfrey, was the proud coach of Perini. There are male and female categories in the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year. The sailing community determines the winners of the two categories. Details of the Awards can be found at the ISAF Website at www.sailing.org. The Awards will be presented at the ISAF Annual Meetings in Singapore on the 8 November. Winning the prestigious award will not be an easy ask, even for someone with Richard's recent performances. Since the inception of the Awards in 1994 only three sailors from the southern hemisphere, male or female, have gone home winners - Sir Peter Blake (NZL) - 1994 (jointly with Robin Knox-Johnstone (GBR)); Russell Coutts (NZL) - 1995 (and for SUI in 2003); and Robert Scheidt (BRA) - 2001,2004. Perhaps most significantly, of the 22 Awards over the period (11 male and 11 female) 16 have been for performances in the Olympic Classes. Yachting Australia Board Member Adrienne Cahalan has been a finalist for the Awards on the last three occasions. ‘It is a real honour just to make the shortlist. There are some great sailors in the World who achieve quite remarkable things. I wish Richard every success. His record over the last 12 month is incredible and is a reflection of the real strength that there is in keelboat and offshore racing in Australia.’
