La Red Bull Youth America’s Cup a été lancée aujourd’hui dans la baie de San Francisco (USA). Dans des conditions de navigation soutenues, l’équipe suisse termine le premier jour de compétition à la septième place du classement général.

San Francisco, le 1er septembre 2013 - Lucien Cujean et son équipe ont pris leurs marques lors de la première journée de la Red Bull Youth America’s Cup à San Francisco. Les deux manches prévues ont pu être courues dans des conditions typiques de la baie de San Francisco : 15-18 noeuds de vent, 14°C et le tout devant le Golden Gate Bridge caché dans le brouillard.

Les résultats du jour de Team Tilt, huitièmes à la première manche puis cinquièmes à la deuxième, sont marqués par des départs qui doivent être améliorés : 'Nous nous positionnons mal avant la ligne de départ et mettons trop de temps à prendre de la vitesse au départ ; nous passons donc les deux fois la première marque en mauvaise position,' explique Thomas Mermod, régleur de voiles d’avant. 'Nous arrivons toutefois à gagner des places durant la manche malgré ces erreurs au départ, ce qui est très positif. Chacun d’entre nous connaît son rôle à bord, les manoeuvres marchent bien et nous sommes en confiance avec le bateau.'

Participer à la Red Bull Youth America’s Cup face à neuf équipes dont les navigateurs ont des palmarès impressionnants malgré leur jeune âge - jeux olympiques ou encore AC45 World Series - est une première réussite, comme le souligne le skipper Lucien Cujean : 'Nous sommes vraiment heureux d’être là, après tous ces mois d’entraînement. Ce que nous vivons ici est incroyable!'

Il reste six manches à courir dans la Red Bull Youth America’s Cup jusqu’au mercredi 4 septembre, à raison de deux manches par jour entre 11:00 et 12:30 heure locale. Que faut-il changer en vue de la deuxième journée de compétition demain ? La réponse fait l’unanimité au sein de l’équipe : 'Il faudra vraiment attaquer, être beaucoup plus agressif ! Nous savons de quoi nous sommes capables, et l’avons montré hier lors des tests de vitesse.' Les concurrents sont avertis, la seule équipe de la Red Bull Youth America’s Cup issue d’un pays enclavé, n’a pas dit son dernier mot.

The Road to the Red Bull Youth AC ended with Kaenon sailors Pete Burling and Will Tiller taking the top two spots The Road to the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup ended with Kaenon sailors Pete Burling and Will Tiller taking the top two spots of this inaugural championship. Burling displayed his determination and tenacity with a convincing victory, while Tiller clearly displayed his teams resourcefulness and fight to constantly battle back and make it a clean sweep for the Kaenon sailors

From the first inkling we had to compete in this event, through the last race on September 4, the past 19 months have been an incredible journey. Mikey Radziejowski summed it up saying 'This has been the best time in my life.'
