RS400 Fat Face Circuit at Parkstone
by Paul Hilliar on 22 May 2008
RS400s gathered alongside the RS200s at Parkstone YC for the Fat Face Circuit on the weekend of 17 May to share a weekend of proper sea sailing. Over six races the conditions varied from 8 to 15 knots and it was fairly shifty but there were always waves, which made a welcome (for most) return. Tom Halhead and Christian Humphrey won to make it back to back circuit event wins.
Parkstone made both fleets extremely welcome and there is nothing like a free bacon roll and cup of tea at the bar-be-queue beside the slipway to put a smile on sailor’s faces – what a fantastic effort.
Race one got underway in 8 knots and after a major left shift on the first beat it was a three way tussle for the lead between Sally and Martyn Styles, Tom Halhead / Christian Humphrey and Dave Jones / Mark Hogan from Port Dinorwic. Eventually, Jones / Hogan won out, with the Styles’ just holding off a charge from Halhead/Humphrey.
In the second race, locals Lucy MacGregor/Georgie Blaver-mann led half way through but lost out to Halhead/Humphrey near the top mark and had to settle for second, ahead of yet more locals Phil Jackson/Gerrard Barron.
For race three it was a repeat performance from Halhead/Humphrey, but this time Jones/Hogan were displaying bursts of frightening pace to come through to second place in front of Paul and Mike Allen.
Sunday dawned with more breeze and decent rolling waves. Paul Hilliar/Stu Jagger found conditions to their liking and took the lead early on and extended to win by a large margin. Making a remarkable comeback from mid fleet, the Allen’s took second place ahead of Richard Gray/Nathan Pinch.
After a short delay for the wind to settle, race 5 started with the wind having moderated. Jones/Hogan and Halhead/Humphrey looked set to take the top two places but then the race turned itself inside out on a huge shift to catapult Stuart Hudson/Nigel Wakefield into a huge lead. Squib legend Chris Hogan/June Riley took second place ahead of Gray/Pinch.
After the fleet inversion in race 5 mixing the results up, there were four possible winners going into the final race but from three quarters up the first beat, Halhead/Humphrey took the lead and never let it go. They won the race and the event from Hilliar/Jagger, with Jones/Hogan grabbing third overall from the Allens.
The next RS400 event is this weekend (24/25 May), when the Purple Marine RS400 Northern Tour visits Pwlhelli. The action then follows thick and fast with the ever-popular Sprint championships being held at Rutland the weekend after (31 May/1 June).
Pre entry is required for the Sprint championships. You can find the entry form at http://www.rs-association.com/index.asp?fleet=RS200&selection=forms under ‘Other Documents’
