After two days of strong winds, conditions turned light with a change of wind direction into the northeast for day three of RC44 Puerto Sotogrande Cup.
Vladimir Prosikhin’s Team Nika, on which RC44 circuit founder Russell Coutts is calling tactics, made the best of the tricky dying breeze to take the win in today’s only race, elevating her up the leaderboard from ninth place to sixth.
Conversely yesterday’s overall leader and local favourite, John Bassadone’s Peninsula Petroleum, was one of three boats over the start line early. Slow to turn back to restart, she ended up trailing the 11 boat fleet around the race course. This caused her to drop to third place overall behind Vladimir Liubomirov’s Bronenosec Sailing Team in first with Valentin Zavadnikov and Leonid Lebedev’s Synergy Russian Sailing Team just one point behind.
Three more fleet races are scheduled for tomorrow, the penultimate day of the competition.
