Purple Marine RS400 Northern Tour

by media on 13 Jun 2008
Round four of the RS400 Northern Tour was held over the weekend at Bassenthwaite SC, sponsored by Purple Marine. Winners were Richard and Elaine Marsh from the Elton SC. The Marshes were able to discard their first race, a sixth place, and then carded a very consistent series over the remaining five races, never worse than third, to edge out Paul and Mike Allen by one point for the victory.

The breeze shifted to northerly immediately after the first start resulting in a one sided upwind downwind race. Locals Robin Dawson and Mike Cowen made the most of the new breeze to lead race 1 at the windward mark, followed by Paul and Mike Allen with Dave Jones and Joe Hartigan in close pursuit. The Allens sneaked passed Dawson downwind to take the gun.

Dave Jones made the most of a shift from the right in race 2 eventually winning the race by a mile. The Allens snatched second from Richard and Elaine Marsh in a dying breeze. Race 3, in a F2 Northerly, and Dave Exley and Chris Bassett rounded the windward mark first only to hoist into no wind! Exley rounded the leeward mark first, followed by the Allens and Jones. The PRO signalled a finish at the windward mark and the battle began with the Marshes winners and Alex Fleming and Nick Blore taking a well-earned second place.

Sunday delivered a healthy force. Paul Allen, now crewed by Elaine Marsh, battled through to take first place in race one. Gowers and Riley snatched third from Jones on the last run. After a great first leg, Exley and Bassett won race two with Robin Dawson and Mike Cowen a close second.

Allen and Marsh were equal on nine points at the start of the last race, with Jones just two points behind. Marsh and Gowers led round the windward mark with Jones just behind and Allen rounding in the teens. Gowers and Marsh battled throughout the race with the lead changing hands on several occasions, however it was Richard Marsh who eventually won by a bowsprit, and with it claimed a well-earned event win.

Overall a fantastic weekend both on and off the water. Well done to Bassenthwaite SC for a great event.
