Barz Optics - Melanin Lenses

Product of the Week- small but important, a good working light

by Des Ryan on 27 Dec 2011
Do you look like this? .. .
Do you look like THIS when you are working in the engine room? Notice all the bright light is behind this poor frustrated Sydney sailor, who actually has the engine light turned on! What you need is the brightest possible job to make life easier when you have your head down in the engine room.

That's where this week's Product of the Week comes in. I can't tell you how many engine rooms I have examined (mostly when boat shopping) and noticed that the lighting in the engine room is inadequate.

Not only is it frustrating, but working in a dimly lit engine room can be even unsafe. DuraLed Engine Room & Utility Lighting from Hella marine brightens, not only engine rooms, but all dark corner work areas with an ultra-wide spread of crisp white light. Proper, purpose-built lights will keep you smiling through even the dirtiest job - and you won't have to drag leads around the boat to shine a light on a job.

So that the switch is easy to find, an optional new ON/OFF switch on the lamp face is controlled by pressing the center Hella logo.

Purpose built to withstand the rigors of the damaging marine environment, the lights are completely sealed. Lenses are made of UV- and impact-resistant acrylic with a heavy-duty nylon shroud. Their durable construction and bright, 12-LED white or warm white output are suitable for interior or exterior applications.

Hella must know how precious power is to the cruising sailor, because power consumption is a mere 2.5W.

The manufacturer tells us that Hella marine's Multivolt circuitry provides uniform illumination across inputs from 12-24V DC even under severe voltage fluctuations. DuraLed lamps are reverse polarity and spike protected and won't blink or flicker.

The surface-mounted lamps measure approximately 140mm x 65mm x 32mm. Each light is pre-wired with 500mm of twin core marine cable.

If your local marine store does not stock them, you can contact Hella by emailing info@hellamarine.com, learn more about the product on at www.hellamarine.com, or contact the Australian distributor:
