With a fleet of 58 boats entered into the 2010 Australian Etchells Champs we can expect to see some world class sailing over the next few days at Lake Macquarie. Here is PredictWind.com's forecast of what is expected for the first few days of the Championship.

Tuesdays forecast is for fine weather with a north-northeast wind of 15 knts in the early morning shifting more towards the northeast for the scheduled start at 1300hrs. The current PredictWind forecast is showing a northeast wind of 14-17 knts at 1200hrs increasing throughout the afternoon to 22 knts at 1500hrs and 24 knts by 1800hrs. The wind is likely to decrease to around 17 knts and shift back towards the north-northeast by nightfall.

Wednesdays forecast shows clear skys making way for overcast conditions, with a chance of rain showers in the afternoon. The forecast is showing northeasterly winds in the morning of 10 knts dropping to under 4knts at 0900 as a front travels up the NSW coast. However the models are showing some variation as to when the wind should shift to the south. One of PredictWind's models is showing the southerly change immediately after the front passes with 11-12 knt winds forecast throughout the afternoon. While the other model is showing more northeast winds between 11-13 knts over the afternoon, increasing to 18knts around 1500hrs before shifting to the south by 2100hrs.

Thursdays forecast is for southeast winds or 9knts at midday increasing throughout the afternoon to 11-15knts for the remainder of the day.

PredictWind is a subscription based forecast offering high resolution wind modelling that zooms into an incredible 1km level. As Will Oxley confirms; 'I find that PredictWind's fine scale models typically do an excellent job of dealing with local topographic effects and predicting the onset of local sea and land breezes. These are the fine details that we are actually interested in as sailors and the global models are just too coarse to pick up these subtleties.'
