Phil Robertson and crew: Garth Ellingham, Simon Daubney, Rafa Trujillo, Nick Bastow and Dave Johns, have won the NZ Open Keelboat Championships on Auckland harbour over the weekend.
Robertson won six of the ten races sailed over the weekend, to take the title from Andrew Wills in second and Paul Snow Hansen in third.
The very shifty south-westerly breeze made racing tight with position changes regularly on all the legs. The MRX fleet proved to be challenging to sail and very evenly matched, resulting in some of the best one design racing in Auckland.
Robertson said 'We are thrilled to have won the event. My crew did an excellent job coming together and sailing as a team for the first time. They kept the boat going fast and helped guide it into the right positions. It was a challenging weekend with 30 degree shifts becoming the norm on every leg. You had to be thinking well ahead of the game. We had a few big ones go our way which took the pressure off us today. All in all, a great weekend of sailing and a really fun event to race in.'
