Outteridge and Jensen – What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger
by Rob Kothe and Jedda Murphy on 22 Sep 2014
2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships, Santander - Outteridge and Jensen in 49er battle Thom Touw
http://www.thomtouw.com
The London 49er Gold Medallist, Artemis America’s Cup skipper, Moth 2014 World Champion, Nathan Outteridge had a tough day at the office today.
Not quite as tough as the one he had in the Qingdao 2008 49er medal race, but some of the same players were there...
In the Dunas boat park, post Santander Medal Race Outteridge was rueful about opportunities lost.
‘Going into the medal race we were two points off the Danish team so it was a who beat who scenario. But we also had the Portuguese and Austrians right behind us so we had to be mindful of where they were in the race.
‘The Medal race was sailed right in front of the grandstand here. We had anything between three knots and ten knots of breeze. It was pretty tricky for the whole race and we found ourselves anywhere between second in the race and last. It was like a rollercoaster of a race.
‘It was very stressful racing. It was sort of one of those races where you toss a coin and that’s your result.
‘We came back well on the second beat. We came back well on the third beat but just couldn’t hold it. We just didn’t put our boat in the right position probably at the end of the day.
‘Last top we got ahead of the Danes with about three between us and them and on the run they brought down some pressure and basically sailed round the outside of us and on the finishing line they beat us by about a pole length.
‘It was a pretty disappointing day for us to be honest, to have sailed so well all week. To have had a few errors and yesterday there was a big mishap for us coming in last in that race, last race of gold fleet. Feeling pretty upset about the result today but that’s life and there is two years to go to the Olympics.
‘It has been a very long week here at the ISAF worlds. We have had a lot of light winds, postponement on the water for up to five or six hours on several occasions and the other extreme of racing in over 30 knots of breeze so it has been a very challenging week.
‘A couple of days ago my back flared up a bit and it’s been really good for almost the last eight or nine years now (Nathan was involved in a near fatal collision with a tree on his way to an Olympic class meet in 2006. Doctors said he would likely never walk again, but he made an amazing recovery. )
‘But it flared up this week, I have had some good painkillers today and to be honest in the medal race I didn’t even feel my back the whole race.
‘My mind was a bit preoccupied on wind shifts and other boats. It’s been a really tough week mentally and physically and probably one of the longest ones we have had in a long time.
‘This event marks the end of 2014 for us in the International events. We have got Sail Melbourne coming up in December and between now and the Goobs and I are off to join Artemis in San Francisco and get stuck into that.
‘Last year we basically took a year off and when you take a year off from any Olympic sport it takes a long time to get back to the top and that is what this year is about, trying to identify what we need to do and we have got a good list.
‘We are also working with 49er coach Emmett Lazich working out what we need to do for next year so we can start winning some events and start to build the confidence come Rio. We always knew this year was going to be tough.
‘I am not going to tell you what we are going to do but we have got plenty of things up our sleeves on what we are going to work on.
‘Probably one of the best things we have got going for us now is Dave Gilmour and Rhys Mara have just qualified for the AST and came seventh at the world championships here, so we have got a great training partner and we are going to push each other all the way and one of us will get selected to go to the Olympics.
‘It’s not definite that we are actually going to go to the Games but to have another team in the team with us who is going to travel the world next year is going to be a huge benefit for us.
‘You saw what happened with Peter and Blair this year having fellow NZ 49er sailors Marcus Hansen and Josh Porebski come in second at the world’s last year and I think that have Dave and Rhys with us is only going to make us a better team for next year.’
