With today's O'pen Bic World Championship pre-registration completed, the first races are set to take place on Saturday, 3rd August with the event going on until Monday. Once again young sailors take centre stage at Fraglia Vela Riva with this high level regatta. 170 participants from12 different countries are taking part and will be split into two categories, the Under 13's and the Under 16's.
The nations with the highest number of participants are naturally Italy and France ( the boat originated in France), but there is also a good number representing Germany and Bermuda. Countries from further afield include Australia, Japan and The U.S.
The O'pen Bic class provides lots of fun on the water and even though it is not as popular as the Optimist, the boat chosen by sailing schools, it is enjoying great success among young sailors. The race format will be varied with speed being the crucial factor, something which Garda Trentino can deliver with its exceptional wind conditions. The sails in the two categories will have different dimensions, 3.8 m sq. for the under 13's and 4.5 m sq. for the older group. The event is being organised by Fraglia Vela Riva in collaboration with the National class and O'pen Bic International and promises to be an exciting competition. Italy has lined up a good number of athletes who all have their eyes set on a medal.
The first race is scheduled for Saturday, 3rd August at 13.00.
