North Sea Warning for sailors: 60 tonnes of timber

'Sally after the incident'    .
Yacht crews in the North Sea are warned about 60 tonnes of wooden planks which have fallen overboard from a Norwegian ship, the 79 metre 1977 vintage, 2000 tonne Sally, 55 miles east of Lowestoft in the UK in heavy seas.

Great Yarmouth coastguard said it was liaising with its Dutch counterparts to find the planks, which had fallen off the cargo ship.

Lighter, smaller vessels could face 'significant damage', a spokesman for the coastguard said.

79 metre Norwegian cargo ship Sally - now reached Humber -  .. .
Watch manager at Yarmouth coastguard, Mario Siano, said: 'Individual planks if they come adrift of even larger bundles may not present too much of a threat to larger vessels in the regular shipping lanes.

'But impacting on smaller craft and certainly leisure vessels may cause significant damage.

'There is of course a danger in heavy seas the bundles could split and cause the wood to raft together creating a bigger 'patch'.'

The cargo ship was heading for Humber in the UK at the time of the incident, and it is now believed to have reached the port.
