New challenge for Olympic gold medallist

'Malcolm Page during the Closing Ceremony on London 2012 Olympic Games - Olympic Games'    Jordan Reece
Sydney 470 dinghy sailor Malcolm Page - the only Australian to win two Olympic yachting Gold Medals - will test his skill on the unfamiliar Moreton Bay waters this weekend.

The popular master sailor is the nominated tactician on Lang Walker’s Kokomo one of three high performance New South Wales Farr 40’s joining in a tactical arm wrestle against three identical Queensland rivals for the honour of winning the hand crafted Aberdeen Asset Management sponsored Queensland Championship trophy.

Page has not raced on the selected course east of Green and St Helena Islands before, however the personal winner of seven World 470 championships and two Olympic Gold medals is expected to adjust to the challenge of presenting a mistake free strategy.

The Kokomo crew spokesperson Richard Allanson who crewed with Lang Walker to finish ninth in the recent Farr 40 World championship in Chicago said 'They were a little rusty'.

However with the addition of Malcolm Page the Kokomo crew remain linked with the 2011 World champion and 2012 Bronze medallist the Guido Belgiorno-Nettis steered Transfusion as the combinations most likely to win the tactical arm wrestle over their Queensland rivals Skreenkraft/Lambourdini (David Lambourne), Bribie Star (Ken Down) and Bobby’s Girl (John Lehman).

Earlier today the course area was in a state of calm which has presented all crews with a problem of selecting the best sails to suit the conditions as the Moreton Bay forecast suggests the moderate North East sea breeze will be replaced by a colder and stronger Southerly this afternoon.

Meanwhile the battle lines for this State of Origin war on the water promises to provide a searching test against some of the World’s best sailors when they harden the sheets in tactical combat to win this prestigious inaugural Farr 40 Queensland championship by recording consistent results in three windward leeward races later today.
