The 2014 Doyle Fiji Rally will certainly be fabulous fun for New Zealand sailors. Opua in the Magical Bay of Islands, Northland New Zealand is the departure point with the destination, Savusavu in Fiji’s NE main island of Vanua Levu, the gateway to Fabulous Fiji’s best cruising, diving and fishing.

For skippers, the Opua build up features seminars, briefings, route planning, chart marking and weather routing as well as social and cultural events.
The fleet departs on the first of May, depending on weather, for the anticipated 8 to 10 day passage to Fiji. Timing of the event allows participants the option of stopping at the Minerva's on the way. Approximately 750 miles north of New Zealand these two reef structures allow for some amazing diving, snorkelling and fishing. On the way north this year the fleet took advantage of the full moon and some big tides to run the first every Minerva Cricket International. The result was a draw and no one claimed the one million dollar prize offered for a six off the southern boundary at the Minerva Oval.
Savusavu is well known as one of the best clearance ports in Fiji with friendly officials and a welcome 'Bula'. It wouldn't be an ICA rally without some fun and games and this rally is no exception with a list of activities too long for here. One special event however is the Savusavu Youth Sailing Laser Challenge, an event to raise funds for the yacht clubs youth sailing program and great fun for all. In the five years we've been running this event the cruisers have only beaten the kids once.
Savusavu lies in the North eastern sector of Fiji's vast cruising area. With the trades blowing from the southeast and east it's easy downwind sailing to explore the rest of Fabulous Fiji's stunning reef's, islands and culture, diving, snorkelling and fishing and for the young at heart some great surfing, kite boarding and a host of other adventure activities.
